Last month, skaters in our shooting camps gained valuable insight into shooting & scoring techniques with in-game situations to apply them. Small groups of 6 skaters worked with forward coach, Ryan Keller, and defense coach, Craig Schira, through a series of drills specific to their positions.

Our second round of shooting camps started up today and will run for the month of June. Should we offer these again this summer?

JORDYN: Every coach has a different philosophy when teaching power skating, and for me, a big focus is always on edge/body control. Jordyn has been in a power-skating group with me for two years and for someone so young, she does this skill very well. It’s not always the fastest or most exciting part of training, but she’s embraced the way I teach and continues to improve.

She puts everything she has into each session and approaches every rep with intention. Her work ethic and attention to detail stand out and it’s clear she takes pride in getting better.

AYDEN: I first saw Ayden play last season when he was on the same team as my oldest son. In hockey, you’ll often hear the phrase “he plays the game the right way.” It’s one of those things that’s hard to clearly define and can mean a lot of different things to different people - even for coaches. But for his age, Ayden seems to understand that the game is more than just physical skill.

I only got to watch him in game situations a few times this year but he’s competitive, smart, and when he is on the ice with me, he is eager to learn. He’s also known to throw the occasional body check - which will be more beneficial to him when it is legal (wink). I hope he keeps that intensity!

Both Jordyn and Ayden will always show up to their 7am morning sessions, not just on time - but early. Although they don’t drive themselves, I can tell that it has been instilled in them that being ready and prepared is important. By the time I get to the bench, Ayden is already out working on his shot and Jordyn will be working on her skating or a different skill. I hope they continue to value this down the road and realize how important it will always be for them.

Parker brings a calm and steady presence to each ice session. Although he’ll joke around with the guys, you always know what you’re going to get from him when it comes time to work – and this transfers over into games. He is always polite and asks thoughtful questions – except for that one time, where I am pretty sure it was him who said I was “rusty” 🫠.

When coaching skating, I often talk about “not losing your glide in your tight turns,” meaning I don’t want players cutting so deep into the ice that they lose their speed and waste energy. For his age, Parker does this extremely well - which is a big reason why he looks so smooth in games.

Although he loves to score goals and make plays, he is a team player first and that to me is his number one quality.
