Did you know pencil and writing skills don’t actually start with a pencil?
Before children are expected to hold a pencil and form letters, they work on developing the small muscles and coordination needed to make those skills possible!
Something as simple as picking up and placing these small gems involves pinching with the fingers, grasping, hand-eye coordination, finger strength and controlled movements. Each time a child picks up a small object and carefully places it where they want it to go, they are strengthening the muscles in their hands and developing greater control.
Little hands-on movements and activities like these are what build the foundation to develop skills like using scissors, fastening buttons, and pencil control for writing!
