Consistency Matters More Than Perfection
You do not have to do everything perfectly to make progress. π
Growth is often built through small, repeated actions:
-showing up again after a hard day
-practicing skills little by little
-taking one step at a time
-building routines that support you
-continuing even when motivation feels low
Perfection can feel loud and demanding.
Consistency is quieter.
Itβs the choice to keep going, even imperfectly. β¨
Some days your best may look different than it did yesterday, and thatβs okay.
Tiny efforts repeated over time create meaningful change. πΏ
You are not failing because growth feels slow.
You are building something strong, one step at a time. π

What is Executive Functioning?
Executive functioning is a set of mental skills that help us plan, organize, focus, remember information, manage emotions, and get things done. π§ π±
Think of executive functioning as the brain's ""management system."" It helps us decide what to do, when to do it, and how to stay on track.
Executive functioning skills include:
π Planning and organizing
β° Time management
π― Paying attention and staying focused
𧩠Flexible thinking and problem solving
π Impulse control
π§ Working memory (holding information in your mind while using it)
π Emotional regulation
π Starting and finishing tasks
Challenges with executive functioning might look like:
β¨ Forgetting instructions
β¨ Losing belongings
β¨ Difficulty starting homework or chores
β¨ Feeling overwhelmed by multi-step tasks
β¨ Trouble switching between activities
β¨ Acting before thinking
Executive functioning isn't about laziness or a lack of motivation. These skills continue developing throughout childhood, adolescence, and even into early adulthood.
We can support executive functioning by:
β Breaking tasks into smaller steps
β Using visual schedules and checklists
β Creating predictable routines
β Teaching organizational strategies
β Providing reminders and practice
β Celebrating progress, not perfection
With the right supports, executive functioning skills can grow over time. Every strategy learned today helps build greater independence tomorrow. π

Sensory Needs Are Real Needs
Not everyone experiences the world the same way. π
For some people, lights feel brighter, sounds feel louder, clothing feels uncomfortable, or busy spaces feel overwhelming.
Others may seek movement, pressure, fidgeting, or sensory input to feel regulated and focused.
Sensory needs are not βattention-seeking.β
They are part of how people process and respond to the world around them. π±
Support can look like:
-headphones or quiet spaces
-movement breaks
-dim lighting
-sensory tools or fidgets
-flexible seating
-respecting food and clothing sensitivities
-allowing time to regulate without shame
Accommodation is not βspoiling.β
Itβs creating environments where people can feel safe, regulated, and able to participate successfully. β¨
When we support sensory needs instead of fighting them, we create more compassionate and accessible spaces for everyone. π

What is Masking?
Masking is when someone changes, hides, or suppresses their natural behaviours in order to fit in, avoid standing out, or meet the expectations of others. π±
Many autistic and neurodivergent individuals mask without even realizing they're doing it.
Masking might look like:
π Forcing eye contact even when it's uncomfortable
π£οΈ Rehearsing conversations before speaking
π Hiding emotions or pretending everything is okay
π€² Suppressing stimming or fidgeting
π₯ Copying the behaviours of others to ""fit in""
While masking may help someone navigate certain situations, it often comes at a cost.
Over time, masking can lead to:
π Exhaustion and burnout
π Increased anxiety or stress
π Difficulty understanding or expressing authentic needs
π Feeling disconnected from one's identity
We can ask questions like:
β¨ How can we make environments feel safer?
β¨ How can we support authentic communication?
β¨ How can we celebrate differences rather than expecting people to hide them?
As parents, educators, and clinicians, our goal isn't to teach someone to mask. It's to create environments where they feel safe, accepted, and supported while building meaningful skills that improve their quality of life.
Everyone deserves the freedom to be themselves. π

What is Extinction?
Extinction is a strategy used in ABA where reinforcement for a specific behaviour is no longer provided, making that behaviour less likely to occur over time. π±
While the word extinction can sound intimidating, it doesn't mean ignoring a person or withholding care. It means changing how we respond to a behaviour while continuing to teach and reinforce a more appropriate way to communicate or meet a need. π
For example:
β¨ Instead of giving a toy when a child whines, we wait until they ask appropriately.
β¨ Instead of providing attention for yelling, we respond when calm communication is used.
β¨ Instead of removing a task after refusal, we support the learner to complete it or appropriately request a break.
It's also important to know that behaviours sometimes get worse before they get better when extinction is first introduced. This is called an extinction burst and is a normal part of the learning process.
Extinction should never be used on its own. It is most effective when paired with:
β Teaching replacement skills
β Reinforcing appropriate behaviours
β Consistency across caregivers and settings
β Compassion and patience
The goal isn't to stop behaviour. The goal is to teach a better, safer, and more effective way to communicate needs.
Remember: We don't ignore people. We support people while changing the environment that reinforces the behaviour. π
