A mess was made in the shop this week!

If you’ve taken our 12-week program, or a one week Excellence With Hand Tools class; you know the work that goes into this. There is no better way to become capable with a hand plane than making a pile of shavings.

Be honest - have you done it since? 😉

“The Perfect Board”

It’s an exercise we do at the school in the first week of the 12-week program, as well as the one week hand tool class. There is nothing that will help you get an understanding of bench planes, and grain direction like making a rough sawn board 6-square by hand.

The students always have mixed feelings during the process, but they always appreciate the experience.

I’ve been working with one of the Co-Owners of KingsFleet Inc. on another project here in Perth, ON. I was delighted to find out that they make many finishes I use in furniture just down the road!

Very excited to try these out.

My wife is at work and I’ve been left unsupervised.

I’m pretty surprised this worked; I’m not mad about it! No, this is not a workbench it’s far too weak for that, however, I reckon it will made a great adjustable-height light duty, assembly table.

I normally use my little Top-Off from Milwaukee to run my lamp at my bench, as i hate tripping over cords on the ground. Just another use for this little thing!

Milwaukee Tool never lets me down 😂

I had such a fantastic time at Handworks in Amana, Iowa! A big thank you to the Jameel Abraham and Fr John Valadez for organizing this incredible event.

Many of the folks I met, whose work I’ve followed for some time online were there and what wonderful people they were! So many talented people who clearly have a passion for what they do everyday. Making the 1200km drive south with Konrad Sauer The Stonestreet Carpentry Co and Vic Tesolin • Woodworker was a real treat!

To the folks I had the chance to really get to know over cold b**r back at the AirBnB together - you were remarkably kind, and welcoming. I really enjoyed getting to hear your stories and get to know you all. So thank you so much Kelly Shirey | Custom Signs Albert Kleine Shea Alexander Alexander Brothers Jeff Lefkowitz and andy glenn

I’m incredibly proud to share that I have joined Plane Wellness as the Director of Course Delivery!

I believe the work they are doing is important, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of it. Through my own work at Rosewood Studio, I have seen firsthand the impact that working with your hands can have on a person’s mental health, confidence, and overall journey toward feeling capable again.

There is something powerful about making something real. About slowing down, learning a skill, solving problems, and seeing evidence of your own progress in front of you.

I’m proud to support Plane Wellness in its mission, and I look forward to helping build thoughtful, meaningful course experiences for the people they serve.

Every summer, before the benches start filling up again, we take a good hard look around the shop.

Some changes have been on our list for years. Others have come directly from students who’ve spent time here.

“Could this machine work better over there?”
“Have you thought about replacing that tool?”
“What if the workflow looked like this instead?”

This is the school before the dust starts flying and the changes begin.

Some things will move.
Some things will disappear.
Some new additions are finally making their way into the shop.

And some things? They’ll stay exactly where they are. Tradition still has a place here.

We would love to hear your thoughts.

If you were building your ideal shop, what’s one thing you’d absolutely include?
