For decades, Brooke Valley School has embraced the idea that access to information and connectivity should benefit the entire community. When the modern internet first arrived at the school in the mid-1990s, teachers, students, parents, and local residents were all invited to use the school’s computers and phone line to explore the new online world. Today, that same community spirit continues, with the school still maintaining open Wi-Fi access for community members.
A major part of that connectivity story began in September 2012, when internet service from Storm Internet Services was arranged through Hans and Marian Sinn as part of a lease agreement involving a tall tree near their home. When that lease expired in August 2022, Storm worked directly with the school to ensure a smooth transition by generously extending free service for an additional two years.
Following that period, the school carefully reviewed its options and accepted a discounted rate from Storm of $79.95 plus tax per month for internet service and point-to-point equipment rental. To avoid the additional expense of installing a separate tower, the school now uses point-to-point equipment located on Nick Sinn's new tower. (Do you have an existing tower that could help your neighbour?) Even with the discounted arrangement, internet service currently represents an annual school expense of $1,084.12.
Now, in keeping with the school’s long-standing community-focused outlook, Storm is offering an opportunity to help eliminate that cost altogether. For every new subscription to Storm’s high-speed Fibre Powered Wireless service, the company will provide one full year of free internet service for Brooke Valley School.
Together, the community has an opportunity to help remove this budget line from the school’s expenses for years to come — allowing those funds to be redirected toward programs and opportunities that directly benefit students and the broader Brooke Valley community. And much faster internet! 🎉💻📚💸👍
