Programs like this are exactly why Fire-ED exists. Igniting confidence and building leadership in young people is what community fire safety education is all about. Proud to see the fire service investing in the next generation. Camp Spark by the amazing Baltimore City Fire Department
Camp Spark 2026 is now open for young girls ages 12 to 16. This two day fire camp gives participants the opportunity to build confidence, learn leadership skills, and experience hands on fire service activities with the Baltimore City Fire Department. A fire chief friend who has done the public education work himself once said:
"A firefighter wouldn't battle a fire without the right safety gear, tools and equipment. Fire-ED is how we should kit up for public education."
Fully equipped or don't go in
It's not just a standard for the fire ground. It's the standard that keeps families alive — and it belongs in every classroom, every community visit, every fire prevention program that gets delivered to the public.
Walking in without the right tools isn't a minor inconvenience. It's a missed opportunity to reach a family that needed to hear the message.
Fire-ED was built so that never has to happen.
Shaped in the field. Refined by educators. Priced for the departments fighting for every dollar — and the ones that aren't.
Firefighter-led. Community-driven.
———-
Fully equipped or don't go in – validated by the fire safety professionals who recognized something real in Fire-ED, long before the system was ready to receive it:

We can’t keep expecting “free deliverables” and mascot visits to count as valid public education programs.
The costumes. The colouring pages. The stickers and tattoos. All of it well-intentioned. None of it measured. And the death toll keeps climbing.
Article 7 of my Field Notes series is being published soon. It’s called The Cost of Free — and it’s the most direct piece I’ve written in this series.
Fire-ED. Firefighter-led. Community-driven.

Take us beyond stop, drop and roll and what any brochure can teach us.
A seasoned fire educator will admit:
•Telling people what to do isn’t enough.
•Educators need real teaching tools.
•The public needs to understand fire — how it starts, how it moves, how fast it takes over.

Listen and find out the facts:
•Fire behaviour is the best kept secret in public safety.
•By the time the smoke alarm sounds, we have less than three minutes.
•Not enough time to remember what a pamphlet told us.
•Only enough time to act on what we already know.
This interview says it better than any brochure ever could. Take 20 minutes and listen to why we need to be taken for a deeper dive into knowing what firefighters know: basic fire science.

The Best Kept Secret in the Fire Service: Fire Safety
Listen to an interview with Fire and Life Safety Educator and Trainer Rita Paine as she speaks about the problems that exist and the critical need for improvement. For the history of the fire service

Some fire departments have what most fire departments don’t — a full prevention division. A dedicated budget. A staffed education program.
The reality is most fire departments are running on limited time, skeleton crews, and a mandate they were handed with no model to deliver it.
Their communities still need fire safety education. They still show up. They just don’t have the tools to do it right.
Fire-ED was built for them.
A full community risk reduction system. Age-progressive. Structured. Reusable. A management system that tracks every kit, every facilitator, every child who goes through it.
No prevention division required. No massive budget. No full time educator salary.
Just a firefighter who gives a damn and a model that actually works.
That’s the Fire-ED System Builder.
Firefighter led. Community driven.

It’s time to call it like we see it.
It is a grave disservice.
On average, less than 3% of a fire department’s budget goes to public education.
In an industry built on the premise of saving lives, the actual work of teaching people how to stay alive gets the leftover change.
Three percent.
Nobody talks about it. It's the fire service's best kept secret — and I was onto it.
I've been onto it for decades. That's why I developed Fire-ED.
Make the "Firefighter Led - Community Driven" model the new normal in your community.

Community risk reduction mandates. Another obligation. Another unfunded model.
Chiefs get the obligation. Prevention officers get the memo. And somewhere between the committee table and the community, the program that was supposed to follow rarely shows up.
Fire-ED didn’t wait for the model to come down from the top. It was built from the ground up. Decades before the mandate existed.
A real model. Built for the fire service.
Firefighter led means it doesn’t have to wait for the chain of command to catch up.
Firefighter led. Community driven.

Fire-ED offers more than an awesome teaching tool alone. It delivers a structured pathway from first lesson to a full community risk reduction framework. Fire departments ready to scale don't just meet the NFPA 1300 mandate — they build on it with Fire-ED.
