: Why does SSELC participate in the Terry Fox Run?

“The run gives us a chance to introduce kids to a lot of big concepts in a way that makes sense to them. A huge part of how we try and teach is focusing on connection—helping kids connect to themselves, then their peers, other classrooms, then going bigger to their town, province, country, then the whole world.

Terry’s story teaches things on a lot of those levels. There’s a lot about trying hard and having hope on the inside; going bigger it normalizes concepts like illness and limb differences and teaches compassion around that, and then it teaches how even kids can come together to help people in their community and around the world.

“There’s also not a whole lot of Canadian hero stories that get told, so to introduce them to somebody who did something so monumental is unique and strong for teaching. It’s such a cool, specifically Canadian thing that one of our most famous heroes has a terminal illness and a prosthetic.”

Parents and loved ones are invited to watch your little ones walk for Terry THIS WEDNESDAY (Sept. 23) at the OHS track from 10:30-11:30.
