Support Second Nature School â Give the Gift of Belonging Through the Canopy Fundđ±
Weâre thrilled to be teaming up with our friends at The New Oak Tree for a one-of-a-kind fundraiser in support of The Canopy Fundâour equity-based fund that helps remove financial barriers for families seeking access to Second Natureâs therapeutic, neuro-affirming mental health and education programs and services.
Hereâs how you can make a real impact:
Have a well-loved furniture piece that needs a refresh? Whether itâs a cozy armchair or a dining table ready for a second life, send an email to [email protected] with âSecond Nature Fundraisingâ in the subject line.
âš 10% of every refinishing or upholstery job booked using that code will be donated to the Canopy Fund. âš
Not only will your furniture get a new storyâyouâll be helping a child step into a learning space where theyâre celebrated just as they are.
You can choose to direct your support toward a specific family if one has reached out to you, or contribute to the general fund to help where itâs needed most.
Why it matters:
Every contribution helps ensure no child is turned away due to financial barriers. And together, weâre championing sustainability, community care, and meaningful access to education.
Thank you for helping us grow a stronger, more inclusive Second Nature communityâone family at a time.

đŸ What if the healing our children need isnât found in more appointments⊠but in the barnyard? đŸ
In a world that asks neurodivergent children to sit still, mask their feelings, and keep up â weâre asking something different:
What if we slowed down⊠and listened?
Welcome to Neuro Nest at Farmer Ruthâs Vanderlaand Barnyard Zoo â a nature-based, child-led, neuro-affirming sanctuary where healing looks like muddy boots, feeding baby goats, and learning how to care and connect beyond words.
For ages 3 to 15, Neuro Nest offers:
đ± Therapeutic farm programs
đż Low-ratio, high-connection support
đ Sensory-rich, real-world experiences
đ§ A space where stimming is welcome, communication takes many forms, and every child is the expert on themselves.
This isnât just play â itâs regulation through relationship, learning through nature, and healing through connection.
For some kids, itâs the first time theyâve been truly seen.
For others, itâs the only place their nervous systems can fully breathe.
At Second Nature, we believe every child deserves space to be wild, free, and fully themselves â and the Neuro Nest is that space.
𧥠Letâs raise kids who donât have to recover from childhood.
Letâs meet them in the barn.

Ontario is in a full-blown mental health and education crisis.
As a parent of three neurodivergent kids, Iâve lived the fear, the frustration, and the heartbreak of watching children fall through the cracks of systems that werenât built for them.
Thatâs why I created Second Natureâand why weâre now expanding into more communities across Ontario.
We offer neuro-affirming, child-led, trauma-informed care that meets families exactly where they are. We put relationships first, because real healing doesnât happen in programsâit happens in connection.
Over the past few months, Iâve been meeting with families, educators, business owners, and changemakers across Ontario.
And one thing is clear: we canât do this alone.
If youâre a business, a community leader, or someone who believes that accessible, relational mental health care is not a luxury but a rightâwe need you.
Weâre calling in collaborators.
Weâre looking for partners who are ready to step up and help build something better for our kids.
This isnât just my missionâitâs personal. And itâs urgent.
Letâs stop waiting for broken systems to change. Letâs build the future our children deserve.
Because for every child and family in this province, real support should be Second Nature. đ±

Did you know that children can experience trauma at schoolâwithout ever facing a single âtraumatic eventâ?
Itâs called educational trauma, and for many neurodivergent children, itâs not rare. Itâs routine.
Educational trauma happens when a childâs nervous system is repeatedly overwhelmed by an environment that feels unsafe, invalidating, or impossible to succeed in.
It can look like:
Being punished for stimming or needing movement breaks
Constantly being told to âjust try harderâ when executive function is the real barrier
Being praised for masking distress, and reprimanded when the mask slips
Living in fear of public shaming, clip charts, or disciplinary calls home
Coming home every day emotionally exhausted or in full meltdown
Trauma isnât just about what happens to a childâitâs about what happens inside them when they donât feel safe, seen, or supported.
At Second Nature, we help families recognize the signs of educational trauma and begin the healing processâthrough compassionate, neuro-affirming, trauma-informed therapy rooted in attachment and family systems work.
Because no child should have to recover from their education.
And no parent should feel alone in advocating for something better.

Neuroaffirming care is not a buzzword. Itâs a call to action.
In Ottawaâand everywhereâwe must do better for our neurodivergent children, teens, and adults. Neuroaffirming care means seeing, hearing, and honoring the full humanity of neurodivergent people without trying to âfixâ or change who they are at their core.
It is not about ABA rebranded.
It is not about compliance.
It is not about making someone appear more âtypicalâ to fit in.
It is not about quieting stims or forcing eye contact or silencing needs.
Neuroaffirming care is relationship-centered. Itâs curious, respectful, and attuned.
It invites professionals, educators, caregivers, and communities to listen more, pathologize less, and embrace difference as part of human diversity.
This isnât optional. This is the work. Right now, in schools, in clinics, in homes, in policiesâwe need to shift.
Neurodivergent folks donât need to be changed.
The systems around them do.
And if youâre in Ottawa, that means you. That means me. That means all of us.
Letâs make neuroaffirming care more than just words. Letâs make it the standard.
