We're not saying they've been counting the days until September 1…but Ms. Stano may have created a countdown mural, and Mr. Reitano may have built the frame for it.

Your skilled trades journey may be able to begin while you are still earning your high school diploma. 🎓⚙️

Through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, also known as OYAP, eligible OCSB students can earn Co-op credits, gain workplace experience and begin apprenticeship training in a skilled trade.

That means the work you do today can become part of the future you are building. 🔨✨

You do not have to navigate the process alone. Your Guidance Counsellor, Co-op teacher and OYAP team are here to answer your questions, help you understand your options and support you along the way. 💙🤝

Sometimes the best way to discover whether a career feels right is to experience it.

Our OCSB Cooperative Education lets you earn high school credits while learning in a real workplace. You can meet mentors, practise new skills, build confidence and begin making connections for your future. 🦺🤝✨

You are not expected to arrive knowing everything. Co-op is a place to ask questions, learn from others and discover strengths you may not have recognized yet.

Trying something does not mean choosing it forever. It is simply a brave next step. 🌱

TPH Plumbing & Heating

Imagine walking past a home, a staircase, a wall or a community space and being able to say:
“I built that.” 🏠🔨

Construction is more than working with tools. It takes creativity, mathematics, problem-solving, precision and teamwork.

Through OCSB Technology courses, the Construction SHSM and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy, you can begin building your skills and your future while you are still in high school. 🦺📐

🏡 Why are most homes in Canada built with wood instead of steel?

It’s not because wood is “better.” It’s because it’s the right material for the job.

🌲 Wood is renewable. Canada has abundant, sustainably managed forests, making lumber readily available.

🛠️ It’s easy to work with. Carpenters can cut, shape and assemble wood quickly, helping homes go up efficiently.

❄️ It performs well in our climate. Wood is a natural insulator, helping improve a home’s energy efficiency during hot summers and cold Canadian winters.

🏠 It’s lightweight and strong. Pound for pound, wood offers an impressive strength-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for residential construction.

That doesn’t mean steel isn’t important.
Steel is often the material of choice for larger buildings like hospitals, schools, office towers and warehouses because of its strength and ability to span longer distances.

At OCSB, students in Construction Technology, SHSM, OYAP and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA) learn that choosing the right material is just as important as knowing how to build with it.

Because every great builder knows…the best material depends on the job.

Your creativity belongs in the skilled trades!

Creating does not happen only on a screen or a canvas, but also in kitchens, workshops, salons, and manufacturing spaces. It happens when raw materials become something useful, beautiful or delicious. 👨‍🍳🪵🧱✨

OCSB courses and SHSM programs in areas such as Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing and Construction can give you opportunities to learn by doing.

If working with your hands helps your ideas come alive, there is a pathway for you.

Someday, you may step back, smile and say, “I created that.” 🙌💙

🚒 Why are fire hydrants different colours?
It’s not just for decoration.

In many communities, the top and caps of a fire hydrant are colour-coded to help firefighters quickly identify how much water the hydrant can deliver.
🩵 Light Blue = Very high flow
💚 Green = High flow
🧡 Orange = Moderate flow
❤️ Red = Lower flow

The body of the hydrant may be painted a different colour by the municipality, but those coloured caps can provide valuable information during an emergency.
It’s one more example of how thoughtful design helps skilled professionals do their jobs safely and efficiently.

At OCSB, students exploring Skilled Trades discover that infrastructure is full of purposeful details. From plumbing and construction to engineering and public safety, every design decision helps build stronger communities.
