Captured on camera! I am so excited to have attended the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM)’s 20th anniversary event last Friday. The school (located in Thunder Bay and Sudbury) took in its first medical students-55 of them- in 2005. It has continued to grow in a way that supports Northern Ontario health equity and a healthcare workforce specifically trained for the realities of practicing in our area. This year’s medical school intake is 88 students, with more expansion planned. The residency program has 240 residents in several different specialties, and that program is expanding as well. A mind-bending 1900 faculty across the North provide n-the-ground learning experiences, and the school has 50 faculty of their own. Learner and faculty wellness is a priority. In the photo, I’m learning more about Learner Wellness Services and the breadth of their offerings. Faculty Wellness is an emerging program that many will benefit from.

It was a provincial holiday in Ontario on Feb. 20 called ‘Family Day’. Getting connected and spending non goal-oriented time with loved ones is an essential component of our wellbeing. This was brought into stark focus during the pandemic, and of course it remains an issue today. However, Family Day pre-dates the pandemic- I believe it was designed to place a holiday into February, something we didn’t have in Ontario (and most of Canada).
Our family celebrated Family Day a bit early- we had my daughter over to make and consume delicious thin Finnish pancakes for dinner together. There was mixing, frying, resting, laughter, some philosophical conversation (as always with my daughter 😉), and simple joy in being together.
Of course, family doesn’t just mean relatives- family are all those you love and have a deep connection with.
Who is your family?
Have you connected with them recently? How would you like to connect with them?
What could you do today to foster that- text them, call them, send them a funny cat meme, invite them for a meal or a conversation over a warm beverage?
I’m off to send a cat meme to my sister, and check in with an old friend…
