Neighbourhood House New West is at Lord Kelvin Elementary accepting donations of cash, gift cards ($25 or more) and clothing today, July 11, between 1 and 5, to support the families that had their homes destroyed in yesterday’s fire. Come around to the gym off 7th Avenue to drop off donations.

We're seeing a lot of misinformation about Columbia Square coming out of a recent "expert presentation" hosted by two New West councillors -- here are the facts!

Every development of this size has a parking plan, this one is no different.

Every development of this size has a traffic management plan, this one is no different.

This development is paying millions and millions of dollars to the city to build infrastructure.

There is a requirement to permit a school on the site.

Doctors? The city doesn't provide doctors, but there's a big new expansion to RCH happening right now that'll double its size.

We're disappointed that two city councillors would allow this misinformation to spread at and from an event they host, but we're here to set the story straight.

Columbia Square rezoning is coming to Council on Monday and can use your support! Here are the highlights:

👶 9,500 square feet of not-for-profit childcare space
🏫 option for the School District to purchase or lease property from the applicant to build an urban format public school
🏙️ 20% secured market rental
🏠 about 3,800 new homes
🛒 all current 122,000 square feet of commercial space would be retained
🌳 public open space network consisting of 25% of the site area
💰 total density bonus contributions of $60,000,000 (yes, $60 million!) to the city which would be used for city initiatives (purchasing land for community center / library / affordable housing...?)

If you're in favour of these massive benefits over a strip mall and parking lots, write in to Council today at [email protected] and ask them to vote in favour of the rezoning for 88 Tenth Street - Columbia Square! (keep in mind your letter will be in the public record, so be nice!)

😍😍😍 Who else wants to see more townhouses in New West?

When the City updated our Official Community Plan (OPC) in 2018, we looked to encourage and find new housing forms including townhouses. I was pleased to attend the grand opening and meet some of the new residents of this townhouse development on Eighth Ave which is one of the first new townhome developments since the OPC revision.
