A career in music can mean much more than being on stage.

For young artists, turning a passion for music into a career can sometimes feel like an all-or-nothing choice: become a performer or find another path.

But the music industry offers a much broader range of opportunities from production and sound engineering to marketing, event management, artist development, communications, technology and entrepreneurship.

When young people have the opportunity to learn about the many different roles behind the music they love, they can begin to connect their interests and strengths with realistic career possibilities.

Canada is rethinking youth employment. We need to rethink how we prepare young people for the world of work.

A new parliamentary report on youth employment highlights a difficult reality: graduating from high school or post-secondary education is no longer enough to guarantee a smooth transition into meaningful employment.

Young people are navigating:
• Higher youth unemployment
• Rising living costs
• Fewer entry-level opportunities in some sectors
• Rapid changes in technology and AI
• Increasing employer expectations
• Greater competition for jobs

So what can help?

Earlier career exploration. Meaningful work experiences. Connections with employers and professionals. Career guidance. Transferable skills. And, importantly, the confidence to imagine a future that feels possible.

That’s at the heart of Reboot Plus.

We believe career development shouldn't begin with a job application. It should begin much earlier by helping young people discover their strengths, explore possibilities, build connections and develop hope for the future.

What happens when a young person becomes disconnected from school or work?

It's easy to look at statistics about young people who are not in employment, education or training and see a number.

But behind every statistic is a person with different experiences, circumstances, strengths and barriers.

Recent research from Statistics Canada looks more closely at young people who are not in employment, education or training and the different circumstances surrounding these transitions.

That matters because there isn't one reason a young person may become disconnected.

And there isn't one solution.

Effective career development can create opportunities for young people to pause, reflect, explore possibilities and begin building a path forward, particularly when traditional pathways haven't worked for them.

Young people need opportunities to discover where they could go next.

Around the world, millions of young people are not currently in employment, education or training. At the same time, technology, AI and changing labour-market demands are reshaping the jobs and skills young people are preparing for.

That means career development can't simply be about choosing a job.

Young people need opportunities to:

✨ understand their strengths
✨ gain real-world experience
✨ build confidence
✨ develop skills that can adapt to change
✨ imagine a future they can see themselves in

Every young person deserves the opportunity to imagine a future and a pathway to get there.

Canada’s youth unemployment rate has reached a 15-year high.

For young people entering the workforce today, economic uncertainty, slower hiring, and a rapidly changing labour market makes the transition from education to employment especially challenging.

And the impact can last. Research shows that graduating during a difficult economic climate can affect career progression, earnings, and access to opportunities for years to come..

Work experience matters, but so does what happens before and after it.

Canada continues to invest in programs that help young people gain work experience and develop skills for the labour market.

The federal Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, for example, supports youth through employment services, skills training, mentorship, work experience and wraparound supports.

That's important because getting a young person into a workplace is only part of the equation.

Young people also need opportunities to reflect:

💭 What did I learn about myself?

🔎 What did I enjoy—or not enjoy?

💡 What skills did I discover?

🧭 Did this experience change what I want to explore next?

Career development becomes richer when experience is connected to reflection, exploration and future planning.
