Hello Everyone,

This is an important message from NMS. We are very excited to announce an amazing opportunity for our students. The Community Schools Coordinator for our school district, Linda Dempsey-Nicholson, has been working diligently this year to ensure that we have cafeteria service for next year, and we are excited to release the highlights of this tentative plan today.

Our new cafeteria program will be a partnership among the three Nackawic schools, the Nackawic Wellness Committee, the NHS Culinary Technology Classes, Chartwells, Breakfast Clubs of Canada, community volunteers, and potentially some Co-Op students and student leaders.

All students at the 3 Nackawic schools will have the opportunity to purchase a complete meal daily which includes fruits, vegetables, lean protein, complex carbs, and milk for the entire school year. Students will pay only $3.00 per meal and the remainder of the meal cost will be subsidized by partners and the school district. There may even be an opportunity to provide fully subsidized meals to those students identified as being in need by the school. The meals will be preordered and prepaid 1 week in advance through the Chartwells online ordering system. We will have a paper order and cash option for those families that require this service.

Chartwells will provide the committed day-to-day operations of staffing, food preparation, serving, and cleaning on a cost-recovery basis only. Culinary Technology students, Co-Op students, and other student leaders will support the day-to day operations. The Nackawic Wellness Committee will play a committed role supporting student supervision, paper order and money calculations, and food preparation. Students, parents, and volunteers will have a voice in menu development and selection.

Anglophone West School District, in partnership with the Nackawic Wellness Committee will administer the program. Together, they will ensure all policies and procedures are in place, and all finances are secured through partnerships and in-kind contributions.

During the month of May, there will be an opportunity for parents, students and other stakeholders that are interested, to participate in reviewing suggested meal selections through Chartwells. If you would be interested in being a part of this process, please contact NMS. A survey will also be sent home in the near future to gauge how many parents and students are likely to take part in this $3 meal initiative and how many days per week they anticipate using the service.

We are very excited to see this initiative put into action for the 2022-2023 school year. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions, or if you would like to be part of the meal selection focus groups.

Thank-you and have a great day!
