Almost everyone puts this off until the dryer starts running long. By then the damage is already paid for.
A clean dryer vent moves air at about 1,500 feet per minute. A vent at the one-year mark has lost roughly 30% of that airflow to lint buildup along the duct wall. The dryer compensates by running the heating element longer on each cycle. Longer element-on time means higher coil temperatures, which is exactly what burns the nichrome wire from the inside out. Sears Home Services and Mr. Appliance both report heating-element failure as the #1 service call on dryers older than five years.
The cost stack is predictable. A heating-element assembly runs $35 to $90 in parts and another $150 to $260 in labor for a total of $185 to $350 installed. The blower motor downstream takes the same heat punishment because hot exhaust is recirculating through it, and it fails next at $250 to $500 installed. The control board occasionally goes with them at $150 to $400. A dryer that retails at $800 to $1,200 ends up with $800 in repairs over three years, at which point most owners replace the appliance.
Annual cleaning interrupts this chain. The Chimney Safety Institute of America and the Indoor Air Quality Association both recommend cleaning the full duct (not the screen, the duct) once every 12 months for a household running 4 to 6 loads per week. Heavier use (kids, pets, sports clothing) moves the interval to every 9 months.
The DIY kit pays for itself the first year. A Gardus LintEater Pro runs $30 to $40 and comes with 12 feet of flexible rod, a brush head, and a shop-vac adapter. Disconnect the duct from the back of the dryer, feed the brush in from the inside, run a cordless drill at low speed for two to three minutes, and pull lint out the outdoor flap with the shop-vac. A professional service runs $120 to $180.
Early warning signs the buildup has already started: drying time over 45 minutes for a load of towels, the laundry room feels noticeably warmer during the cycle, the outside of the dryer is hot to the touch, or the outdoor flap is not pushing open during a cycle.
