One of the biggest “aha!” moments in Mahjong is realizing that the very things that helped you learn can eventually hold you back.

We all use crutches.

🀄 “I turn the tiles at the end of the wall to form a tail.”
🀄 “I stand the last discard to remember who discarded it.”
🀄 “I use a line finder to keep my place.”
🀄 “I form a little stack at the second left.”
🀄 “I keep my tiles separated on my rack.”

These shortcuts are completely normal. They’re confidence builders when you’re learning because they simplify a game that can feel overwhelming.

But here’s the catch...

Crutches are meant to help you walk—not keep you from running.

As your skills grow, it’s time to start questioning those helpful cues. The strongest players play without them. They adapt to the game and trust their decisions - and drop those habits they formed as beginners.

So ask yourself:

Teaching mahjong is one of the greatest joys of my life.
But there’s another side to running a small business that people don’t always see.
Every class represents hours of preparation, planning, travel, communication, and a reserved spot for that particular group. When cancellations happen at the last minute and business policies aren’t respected, it affects much more than just one class.
This isn’t about blame—it’s about understanding what it takes to keep a small business going.

Do you know who **East** is in Mahjong? 🀄

East is the player who starts the game and keeps everything moving. While many people call them the “dealer,” that’s not quite accurate in American Mahjong since everyone takes their own tiles.

So what does East do?
✨ Starts each game with 14 tiles (everyone else begins with 13)
✨ Rolls the dice to determine where the wall is broken
✨ Begins the first discard

But how do you become East? There are actually **two common ways** to choose! Some have the hostess be East first, while others use the dice to determine the starting positions.

Every table has its own traditions, but once East is chosen, the game is ready to begin!
