Yesterday, my 8-year-old son came home and quietly told me something that broke my heart.
He shared that he was bullied at schoolโkids said hurtful things to him, words that stayed with him long after the moment passed. I asked him softly, โWhat did you do?โ
He looked at me and said, "In my mind, I wanted to take revengeโฆ but you always told me to be a good boy. So I didnโt do anything. I just cried.โ
And then he added that it was his best friend who spoke up for him. And, I want to pause right there and say thank you to that best friend, thank you for standing up for my son, for speaking when he couldnโt, and for showing him what kindness looks like in real life.
As a mother, I felt the pain in his voice like it was my own. No child deserves to be treated unkindly, especially by other children. Itโs heartbreaking that in a place where theyโre supposed to learn and grow, some kids are made to feel small.
I asked him again, โWhat are you planning to do next time?โ And with the kind of strength only a child can carry so purely, he said: โI will strive to be successful in class.โ
That line stayed with me. Because in that moment, my child didnโt choose bitterness. He didnโt choose revenge. He chose to rise.
And that reminded me of something Iโve always believed:
My kids have always been taught to reach out to others.
To sit beside the child who looks lonely.
To include someone who feels left out.
To be a friend.
They were taught to never be a bully. To never be the reason someone has to dim their light.
But they were also taught this:
They were taught to always be kind, because the world becomes a little brighter when we choose kindness, especially when itโs hardest.
And more than anything else, they were taught to always come home.
My son telling me his story, reminded me that I am his safe space. And that is something I will never take lightly.
I canโt shield my children from every painful situation. I canโt control the choices other people make. But I can remind them every single day that they have a home where they are safe, protected, and loved no matter what. And that they have parents who will face bullies with them and for them.
Because moments like this may hurtโฆ but they also build resilience. They teach our children what kind of people they want to become. And if the world can be cruel, then let our homes be the place that teaches them to stay soft, without staying weak.
So today, Iโm holding my son a little tighterโฆ
and Iโm choosing to teach him again what he already showed me:
To every child who has ever been made to feel small:
And to every parent raising kind children in a world that isnโt always kind, keep going.
