Try this when reading a non-fiction book.

Do what you would do if traveling to a new destination, meeting someone new, or starting a new job… Reading a new self-help or non-fiction book is similar; don’t be afraid to do the same.

You would not enter New York by a bridge and start your journey at the beginning of that bride, but follow the following path: you will start with an overview of New York, then go to what interests you most, then see fewer tourist places, then get deeper in the life of New Yorkers.

Start to read the same way. First, do an overview of the book. Read sections, paragraphs, or chapters that interest you the most. Read the rest of the book when you are ready for more.

How to improve your vocabulary without spending too much time.

A good vocabulary can:

· improve your writing
· Grant you respect from your peers
· help you reason and explain your reasoning
· make you more confident

There are about 2,000 words that account for almost 75% of everything you read. It is why you don't often stumble on new terms. It also means that it might be good to take 2 minutes to make yours a new word when you encounter one.

You don't always have to consult a dictionary in your reading when you want to understand a new word. You learned new words by context when you first began to speak, and you certainly don't need to stop now. You never consulted a dictionary when you were three years old, yet your vocabulary snowballed.

Unfortunately, memorizing vocabulary words is one of the least efficient ways to expand your vocabulary. Studies show that you learn new words best through multiple exposures to a word and when the terms have meaning for you or discover them in context.

The main point to remember about enlarging your vocabulary while you read is not to avoid words you don't know. Pause in your reading and give them a moment's thought. You can't learn new words if you don't take the time to decode and absorb them.

Suggestions

When you learn a new word, take a few seconds, and see yourself using that word on 2 or 3 occasions in the future.

• You will see if it makes sense, and re-read the definition again if you aren't sure.

• It will significantly improve that you remember that new word and its meaning because you project yourself into situations that will probably happen. It will come back to you then.

Mastering a word takes time.

Typically, it will take you multiple occasions before you master a word. Since this is how it works, don't get concerned about it.

Suppose you take the time to learn the words of a given field. If you want to learn a lot about cooking, you might take advantage of understanding words like lamé, beat, dollop, drizzle, etc. Spending some time understanding the ¨language ¨ will help you learn faster.

Author's Objective

One-on-One Coaching

Reading a book is like one-on-one coaching. Let me explain.

Although hundreds of people may be reading the same book as you now, for you, with the author's book in your hand, it doesn't matter. It's like you're the only one with him now. You are alone here.

Suppose the author is just with you and gives you private coaching with the content of his book.

If he is a good coach, he would adapt his coaching and consider what you already know or quickly understand. He wouldn't force you to review any part of his coaching if he realized you already know that piece from your other readings or experience.

So do not hesitate to ignore or not put too much time into the chapters you have already mastered.

Learn to apply what you read.

When you start learning a non-fiction book, remember that you want to learn and apply what you learn from it.

So, in addition to taking notes:

When you notice something you would like to improve, plan it in your calendar.

Plan to do something. It will help you not forget to think about it in the week, the month to come. A simple reminder on your smartphone will do a great job.

We so quickly forget what we read... If you do the above, you will be surprised at how well you do at what you have just learned.

We learn best what we teach.

If you want to make sure you really understand something, explain it to someone else.

Usually, you will fumble over a few explanations allowing you to see where you don't master the concept.

Also, the questions your vis-Ă -vis will ask will give you insight into what aspects you do not master.
