Cyclone Gombe had ravaged the province of Ampula in northern Mozambique in March 2022. The landfall it had caused had terrible repercussions on the already vulnerable citizens of the country.
In fact, non-state armed groups have been waging war in Cabo Delgado, Ampula’s neighbouring province for the past five years. The conflict had already displaced more than a million Mozambicans who continue to face violence today.
The cyclone therefore amplified the precarity of the population by resulting in even more internally displaced people. With the major increase of intense weather events in the country, the situation is only expected to grow further in the next years.
The UNHCR has now built hundred of new homes and is planning to built more by the end of 2022 to relocate those refugees, specifically in refugee camps who have suffered the most damage.

Alphonso Davies is a forward for Team Canada in the World Cup. But did you know he is also a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR?
The 22 year old soccer star was born in a refugee camp in Ghana, after his parents fled the Second Liberian Civil War of the late 1990s. In 2005 Davies and his family were relocated to Canada, where they eventually moved to Edmonton, Alberta. He first played soccer there with a free after-school league. At first Davies could not speak English and struggled to communicate, but his skills were evident from a young age. By the time he received his Canadian citizenship in 2017 Davies was already playing professional soccer in Vancouver. He is the first player born in the 21st century to score at a major international tournament.
Davies continues to speak out about his experience as a refugee. In March 2021, he became the first soccer player and first Canadian to be appointed Global Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR. A Goodwill Ambassador is an official UNHCR position given to celebrities to use their talent and fame to advocate for refugees. As a former refugee himself, Alphonso Davies can be a powerful advocate for UNHCR.
