Nature reminded me this weekend: We can't force a flower to bloom. Parenting isn't about the destination, but the "white space" we leave for them to wonder.

One Model, Three Ways to Play
This model is suitable to be individual activity for toddlers (ages 2-4) or it can be an intro of a lesson for preschooler (age 5-6+)

Ages 2-3: Focus on the "Plant Puzzle." Build the plant and mimic the sounds of the words. (Can you say Root?)

Ages 3-4: Introduce sight reading! Point to the labels while saying them aloud.

Ages 5-6+: Go deep! Talk about the "hidden" parts like the stamen or pistil, and introduce the concept of photosynthesis and pollination.

I have compiled some relevant diagrams for further study in the video, save and screenshot for your next home activity.

This time, our outdoor class brings us to explore the ice formation after freezing rain during the winter.

“The child absorbs their environment through their senses”, Dr. Maria Montessori believed. A post-freezing rain landscape is essentially a giant, natural Montessori classroom.

Sensory-play at the real natural setting will encourage the difference between the objects. Freezing rain is a perfect introduction to states of matter (liquid water turning to solid ice) and meteorology.

For the 3–4yo, they are the sensory explorers, so let them use do-a-dot markers to represent ice or glue physical nature artifacts onto the page. We can ask them, "What did the ice feel like?" Then, we write their exact words down next to their drawing. Seeing their spoken words translated into text validates their thoughts and models literacy.

For the 5–6yo, they are the analytical observers, we can encourage sequential drawing. For this outdoor activity, I have designed a journal template where they can draw to differentiate 2 shapes of ice formation. Have them trace key vocabulary words or attempt phonetic spelling for their labels. Besides, we can also introduce basic measuring tools (like a ruler to see how long an icicle is) and have them record the number.

3–4 岁是感官探索者,对于这个年龄段的孩子,重点在于感官体验。我们可以让他们使用点点笔(Do-a-dot markers)来表现冰块,或将捡到的自然物碎块粘贴在笔记页面上。我们可以问:“冰摸起来是什么感觉?”老师或家长将孩子的原话记录在他们的画作旁。看到自己的语言被转化为文字,不仅能增强孩子的自信,还能建立初步的读写意识。

5–6 岁是分析观察者,这个阶段的孩子开始具备逻辑观察能力,我们可以鼓励序列化绘图。在我设计的日志模板中,孩子们可以画图记录并分辨两种不同形态的冰。接着,引导他们描红关键词汇,或尝试用拼音/简单汉字为图片标注。我们还可以引入简单的测量工具(如尺子),测量冰柱的长度并记录下数字。
