✨ANNOUNCEMENT✨

I am *finally* launching my Sewing in Solidarity project that has been brewing in the background of mel's big mess for quite some time!

& It kind of couldn't be better timing, on this Mend In Public Day organized by Fashion Revolution

While here in Mtl it is too rainy today to mend outside, I am *super* looking forward to mending all your textile items in need of love.

Spring has sprung, and it's time to clean out those closets and get your wardrobe in order! That doesn't just mean getting rid of the old, but patching those holes in your well- loved shirts, or taking in that cute thrifted dress you'de love to wear this summer!

Bring new life to your beloved clothes, and contribute to a good cause while you're at it. 100% of the price that *you decide* to pay for this service will be donated to a social or environmental justice organization. I will announce the first recipient of donations soon!

DM me with any questions or requests for an alteration or repair

Until then,

Peace, love and DIY 🧵✌🏼🪡

happy earth day, y'all!🌏

honestly, I think choosing just one day to underline the respect we need to show for our home is a little silly and, frankly, kind of insulting. however, it can serve as a reminder to think about the impacts our everyday actions can have. while I do think a large part of the responsibility for climate change action falls on corporations and governments, our choices influences their decisions in a significant ways.

one way we can reduce our negative impact is by changing the way and how often we consume products. using, reusing and repurposing items we already have is a sustainable & anti-capitalist act, as it conserves resources and pushes back against the idea that we need constantly need to look to new things to fulfill our everyday needs.

read more of my thoughts on this (and this sweet shirt I made from ) on my latest blog post - link in bio!

also, while I don't want to encourage you to buy new things, my spring scrunchie collection is live and is all made with secondhand fabrics (like most of my scrunchies!)🌸

until next time reduce, reuse and DIY, folks ✌🏼

spring has sprung🌷and I am out of hibernation, too!

it's been a while since I've released anything - I've been working on more personal projects lately, trying to up my own sewing game and thinking about the future of my biz!

here's a little something to get you in those spring fresh feels - three new scrunchies made with beautiful secondhand fabrics:

muted blossom 🌸
linen breeze 🍃
pêches & crème🍑

available in my three classic sizes, for sale on my website www.melsbigmess.com

while you're at it, check out my latest blog post about using what you've got! nothing says spring like making use of what you have in the back of your fridge, closet or messy utility drawer. it can be just what you need to refresh your creativity (and to fight capitalism), too!

see u soon ✌🏼

happy new year ✨ it's been a minute!

it was a quiet year for mel's big mess. with lots of job changes, I had less time to dedicate to my little corner of the maker's world than I expected.

nonetheless, I had several new and returning people support my work, which floored me every time. it is truly an honour to be trusted to make something for someone with my own hands, that they will love and use. 🪡

as promised, I wanted to share with you all how much money I have been able to donate this past year thanks to each and every one of your purchases. 180$! (orgs I donated to are in highlights or on my website)

i have donated the last four months worth of donations to Native Women's Shelter of Montreal. In 2022, I wish to continue to focus my donations on a core set of organizations to which I will donate quarterly (rather than monthly) in order to have a more significant impact. I also hope to post on my blog with the same recurrence to share more about my personal projects & other tidbits of my messy life 🪡

thank you all for your continued support of mel's big mess. though I expect 2022 to be another quiet one, I will continue to show up in different ways to make, share, give back and hopefully inspire you to do so, too.

peace, love & DIY ✌🏼

happy autumnal equinox🍂

did you know that the equinoxes are the days of the year when the day and night are of equal length? (thanks, google!)

if you know me even a little bit, you know that I am o b s e s s e d with fall. the colours, the flavours, the cool weather (good riddance, heat waves), the nostalgic feels. i'm sure my astrology fans out there have an explanation of why it feels so darn good?!

here's a brand new collection of scrunchies to celebrate my favourite time of the year. i hope you enjoy🧡

it's official!!! I have my very own home on the internet! link in bio to www.melsbigmess.com ! 🖱️

I always envisioned mel's big mess to be more than just a shop. while Etsy is a great marketplace for makers like me, it is quite limiting in terms of building a brand & expanding beyond selling.

along with developing new products, i'll be focusing my energy on building this website into a space to share more aspects of my creative life through blog posts & eventually share invites to workshops in the future! (you can still find me on Etsy, though!)

the website isn't perfect yet, but I am simply too excited to wait any longer to share it! if you visit it & find any issues I thank you dearly in advance for sharing your feedback with me!

p.s. if any other makers out there are curious about making their own website on an affordable, easy platform, hmu!

Honoured to be collaborating with to bring you a discussion on a topic I am so passionate about! 🌿

I'll be sharing my no-bs approach to identifying & implementing concrete actions that make a difference in issues you care about, as well as share my own tips & strategies for eco-conscious living that I have developed over the years.
