Exciting! ‘The Only Girl in the Orchestra’, a documentary about Orin O’Brien, the New York Philharmonic double bassist who became the orchestra’s first full-time female musician, has been nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film. https://www.violinist.com/blog/laurie/20251/30262/ Leonard Bernstein hired her in 1966 to join the NY Phil. Last week my mother and I had the chance to see the fantastic pianist Gabriela Montero perform with the National Arts Centre Orchestra | l'Orchestre du Centre national des Arts in Ottawa. It was an enchanting performance, and her improvisation on a theme suggested by the audience was other-worldly. I’ve been enjoying sharing the recording with my students - I’ll share the link in the comments.
