Many benefits to this system!
Holland has found a smart way to beat winter—by melting snow before it piles up ❄️➡️💧
Since 1988, the city has used waste heat from a nearby power plant to pump warm water through nearly 190 miles of underground tubing beneath downtown streets and sidewalks. The result? Snow and ice melt away automatically.
City officials say it’s now the largest publicly owned snowmelt system in North America. Thanks to it, crews rely far less on plows and road salt, making winter maintenance cleaner, safer, and more efficient.
A brilliant example of how reusing energy can solve everyday problems—and turn harsh winters into a non-issue.
