📚 New publication

FMER member Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier has co-edited a new addition to the WONCA Family Medicine Book Series:
Working with Adolescents and Young Adults in General Practice: A Guide for Family Physicians

📆 The book was launched on July 1, 2026, during the 30th WONCA Europe Conference in Paris.

✍️ Edited by Dr. Tellier, Dr. Muna Chowdhury, and Dr. Maria Veronica Svetaz, the book was developed through the WONCA Special Interest Group on Adolescent and Young Adult Care.

🔎 It recognizes adolescence and young adulthood as a distinct developmental stage, rather than simply a transition between childhood and adulthood, and addresses the particular health care needs that arise during this period.

🩺 The book offers family physicians practical guidance for working with young people in everyday clinical practice.

🤝 This approach is especially important for young adults, who can become disconnected from health services during a period marked by significant changes in education, employment, relationships, and identity.

👏 Congratulations to Dr. Tellier and his co-editors on this important contribution to family medicine and adolescent and young adult care!

👏 FMER congratulates alumna Dr. Sara Turcotte on the publication of research arising from her MSc thesis in Volume 48, Issue 2 of Medical Teacher. First published online in July 2025, the article was co-authored with P. Feldman, K. Rice, F. H. Leung, M. Forte, and C. Rodríguez. 👏

🔍 This work titled "Experiences of Remediation in Family Medicine Postgraduate Education: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis" examines remediation from the perspectives of practising family physicians who experienced it during residency.

💡 The study highlights how professional identity, personal circumstances, and the support provided by faculty and others can shape residents’ experiences of remediation.

🎉 FMER at the 13th International Shared Decision Making Conference!

FMER member Dr. Roland Grad participated in the 13th International Shared Decision Making Conference, held at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

🗓️ On July 8, 2026, he presented the poster titled "How Willing are Clinicians to Incorporate Shared Decision Making?" and later joined a panel discussion during the conference’s closing ceremony on July 10.

📊 Co-authored by Roland Grad, Hannah B. Levitt, Maureen R. Boardman, and Glyn Elwyn, the poster explored incorpoRATE, a five-item measure designed to assess clinicians’ willingness to incorporate shared decision making into clinical practice.

💡 The findings highlight how the measure may help educators identify differences in clinicians’ perspectives and initiate meaningful discussions about shared decision making with patients.

👏 Congratulations to Dr. Grad and his co-authors on this important contribution to advancing patient-centred care.

✨ Collaborator Spotlight – Dr. Mark Yaffe MDCM, MClSc, CCFP, FCFP ✨

A physician, educator, and researcher, Dr. Yaffe has dedicated his career to advancing family medicine through excellence in clinical care, medical education, and research.

📚 As a clinician-scientist, Dr. Yaffe has made significant contributions to the fields of family caregiving and elder abuse.

👏 We are truly grateful for his continued collaboration with and commitment to FMER. His expertise has made a meaningful impact and continues to strengthen our work.

🌟 As part of our monthly spotlight series, we’re proud to introduce Dr. Pierre-Paul Tellier, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University 🌟

🩺 A family physician and expert in adolescent medicine, Dr. Tellier developed Clinique Mauve, which is the first to have developed specific expertise to treat racialized patients, immigrants, and from the LGBTQ2s+ community.

💡 Throughout his career, he has advanced his expertise in HPV among LGBTQ2S+ populations while contributing to the development of professional identity in family medicine.

🤝Thanks to Dr. Tellier, the Quebec health system is more aware that access to high-quality health and social services is imperative for successful integration into society. Through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates physical, mental, and sexual health, Dr. Tellier continues to make a lasting impact on the lives of adolescents, young adults, and underserved communities.

💡 With his passion for the care of adolescents and young adults and with his leading role in Clinique Mauve, he remains on the front line for at-risk adolescents and LGBTQ2S+ populations, which makes him a pillar for these communities in Montreal.

💡 "Patient Groups in Family Medicine: Opportunities for Care and Implications for Medical Education

This was the title of the third FMER–PRAM Crossroad Panel Discussion, where researchers, educators, clinicians, learners, and community members came together to explore the opportunities and challenges of group-based approaches in primary care.

On June 12, 2026, the McGill Family Medicine Education Research (FMER) Group and Participatory Research at McGill (PRAM) hosted the third FMER–PRAM Crossroad Panel Discussion, facilitated by Dr. Anne Cockcroft and Dr. Charo Rodriguez. The panel featured four speakers with expertise spanning clinical practice, participatory research, leadership development, facilitation, and health policy. Together, they reflected on how patient groups can strengthen patient care, support professional learning, and inspire innovation in both healthcare delivery and medical education.

🔎 An important theme throughout the discussion was the relationship between participation science, research, education, and clinical practice. Speakers highlighted the value of involving patients and communities in knowledge generation and healthcare improvement efforts, while recognizing the practical realities of translating these approaches into everyday practice.

👏 Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and contributed to this thoughtful discussion. We look forward to continuing these important conversations through future FMER–PRAM Crossroad events.

🏆 The Evaluation Committee of the International Pierre Pluye Awards met on June 5, 2026, to review submissions received for the 2026 competition.

🔎 After a thorough evaluation process, the Committee unanimously determined that no awards would be conferred in 2026. The Committee concluded that the submissions received did not meet the standards required for recognition through the International Pierre Pluye Awards.

📚 What is the International Pierre Pluye Awards?
The International Pierre Pluye Awards recognize outstanding contributions to mixed methods research and scholarship in family medicine education.

📅 Looking ahead, the 2027 edition of the International Pierre Pluye Awards will be launched in September 2026. Information on award categories, eligibility criteria, submission requirements, and deadlines will be posted on our website and our social media accounts at that time.

🌟 As part of our monthly spotlight series, we’re proud to introduce Dr. David Li Tang, Adjunct Professor in Family Medicine at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences 🌟

With a unique background that bridges information science and family medicine, Dr. Tang completed his PhD at McGill University in 2012 under joint supervision from the School of Information Studies and the Department of Family Medicine.

He subsequently pursued a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research, further strengthening his expertise at the intersection of research, health systems, and knowledge translation.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Keith Todd on being awarded the prestigious Meakins Memorial Fellowship from the McGill University Institute of Health Sciences Education!

This fellowship recognizes excellence, leadership, and innovation in medical education, supporting impactful work in curriculum development, research, and advanced training.

As part of this award, Dr. Todd will further develop the Family Medicine residency curriculum with a strong focus on engaging community members and integrating patient and population perspectives into training. This work reflects the growing importance of community-informed education and the value of lived experience in shaping the future of healthcare training.

The fellowship will also support the development of innovative approaches to care delivery through collaboration with the Family Medicine Education Research Group (FMER), alongside Dr. Neil Andersson, Professor of Family Medicine, director of CIET and Participatory Research at McGill (PRAM), and co-director of the McGill Institute of Human Development and Well-being.

💡 Dr. Todd’s award highlights both his contributions to medical education and the importance of continued investment in innovation within family medicine training.
