A heartfelt thank you to Kathy King and Andrea Heinz for coming to Medicine Hat College to speak about Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.

These are not easy conversations, but they are important ones. Thank you for creating space for honest dialogue, learning, and greater awareness.

Human trafficking and sexual exploitation can affect people in every community, which means we all have a role to play. Awareness is only the beginning—we must continue to educate ourselves, support those who may be vulnerable, speak up when something doesn’t feel right, and work together to create safer communities for everyone.

Thank you, Kathy and Andrea, for helping start this important conversation. Now it’s up to all of us to carry it forward.

Students, Staff, Faculty and Community

You are warmly invited to join us in Medicine Hat on Sunday, October 4, 2026, from 7:00–8:00 p.m. for our Sisters in Spirit Vigil.

This evening is a time to come together in remembrance, honour, and solidarity for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S+). We gather to honour the lives and spirits of those who are missing or have been taken from their families and communities, while holding space for the families and loved ones who continue to carry their stories.

We will gather together in a spirit of love, remembrance, and strength — sharing space, raising awareness, and reminding one another that our sisters, our daughters, our mothers, our aunties, and our relatives are never forgotten.

Your presence matters.

Please join us as we stand together, remember together, and continue to walk together toward safety, justice, healing, and accountability.

The Indigenous Engagement & Student Supports Office, with the support of Medicine Hat College, is honoured to organize this important community learning opportunity focused on Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation, featuring Andrea Heinz and Kathy King.

We invite our students, staff, faculty, and community members to join us as Andrea and Kathy share their knowledge, experience, and insights to help us better understand the realities of trafficking and exploitation, recognize when someone may be at risk, and learn how we can respond with greater awareness, compassion, and support.

These conversations can be difficult, but they are necessary. Awareness creates understanding, understanding creates compassion, and together we can help create safer spaces for those who may be vulnerable or at risk.

Come with an open heart and a willingness to listen, learn, and walk alongside those who need support.

To each of you who showed up, helped, listened, and were willing to learn — thank you. Your presence matters.

Today, you helped create a space where important conversations, stories, and teachings can be shared. We are grateful for the respect and good energy you brought with you.

MHC Indigenous Support Office is proud to be located in Treaty 7, the heart of traditional Blackfoot Territory. Today is an opportunity to honor the treaty’s significance and take an opportunity for reflection, learning and fostering greater understanding and reconciliation within the Treaty 7 region.

Today (Sept. 22) marks the 149th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 7. Annually, Treaty 7 Day is observed on September 22 to commemorate the signing of Treaty 7 at Blackfoot Crossing in 1877. Treaty 7 is the last of the Numbered Treaties made between the Government of Canada and the Plains First Nations. It was signed on Sept 22 by five First Nations: the Siksika (Blackfoot), Kainai (Blood), Piikani (Peigan), Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut'ina (Sarcee).

We are honored to invite all students, staff, and faculty to our inaugural session on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Omahksipiitaa Room.

We are privileged to welcome Heidi Heavy Shield (Aksistowakii) from Kainai, AB. Heidi brings a wealth of knowledge to our community, with years of experience as a Social Work Instructor, Clinical Social Worker, and Program Coordinator.
