Snakes on a Plain

Our snakes are migrating back to their winter dens and we are seeing increased road mortality as a result. Please watch the roads carefully. You can do this by incorporating a vision field check 20-40 feet in front of your vehicle. Horizon scanning often isn’t effective at spotting snakes, unfortunately.

I am on vacation, but Isaac and Jessie are covering the hotline while I’m away. Occasionally I actually go places that don’t have rattlesnakes! (Not often though!)

Hi folks! I’m trying to get a sense of how much interest there would be for a full day of snake school on August 31 or September 5/6.

The day would include a classroom session focused on snake behaviour, natural history and snake safety followed by an afternoon excursion to find snakes in the wild.

If interested, please message your date preferences as well as how many people would join, and I will get back to you with details should there be enough interest.

There may also be a two-day upcoming handling course exclusively for biologists, environmental monitors and law enforcement so please message if you’re untested in that.

I am sorry to have to congratulate Valarie Westers because as the winner, you have now been awarded my largest zucchini! I am so sorry you “won” - I didn’t mean to plant zucchini, they were supposed to be pumpkins so that I could carve jack-o-lanterns. I was disappointed too. 😅

The snake was indeed inside the little crawl space of the brick outbuilding. Many of you are getting very good at this!

This hungry guy found himself in a chicken coop where all the eggs were too large for him. The chickens were not super excited to see him and he surprised the chickens’ humans too! All’s well that ends well. No eggs were broken.

On a scale of 1-10, this was an 11 for sketchiness but we got it done. These folks had pulled their garden netting with the intent of not using it again knowing it becomes a snake trap, but hadn’t disposed of it yet.
Tulle mesh works great for protecting gardens without the risk of accidentally trapping a rattlesnake.
A trapped and hurt rattlesnake is a dangerous one. Thankfully, the home owner noticed quickly and we were able to respond before the snake was seriously injured. 🙂
