Back-to-school is getting close and we’ve been thinking about the questions parents ask us most.
Why does my child understand something one day and forget it the next?
Why can they read the words but struggle to explain what they read?
Why does homework take so long?
Why are they capable of so much more than they’re showing at school?
And perhaps the biggest question:
Do they need more practice OR do they need to be taught differently?
This fall, Accelerated Potential Academy is creating something especially for parents and teachers who want to better understand what may be happening underneath a child’s learning struggles and what to do about it.
Practical, research-informed, encouraging and immediately useful.
More details coming soon.
Sometimes the most important step isn't asking a child to try harder. It's learning to see what they need differently.

Sometimes a report card doesn’t tell the whole story.
This is the story of a quiet 12-year-old who was “meeting expectations” on paper, yet had been struggling for years with reading, math, confidence, and the courage to speak up.
Her parents trusted their intuition and that decision changed the direction of her learning.
Through assessment, a diagnosis, and individualized intervention, she is beginning to see herself differently:
I can be a reader too.
If you have ever wondered whether your child is genuinely thriving or simply working hard to keep up, I hope you’ll read her story. 💙💚.

Her Report Card Said She Was Meeting Expectations: Her Parents Knew Something Wasn’t Right.
At 12 years old, this quiet, thoughtful girl had already spent years trying to keep up in school. She wasn’t disruptive. She didn’t complain. And she hardly spoke up when she was confused. She worked hard, stayed quiet, and tried to manage the work, the expectations, and the emotions that came w...

Tutoring Expands Minds and Develops Stronger, More Independent Thinkers
A student may come to tutoring to understand a new concept, learn how to approach an assignment, or get help with work that feels confusing or overwhelming. The immediate goal may seem straightforward: explain the material, work through the problem, and help the student move forward. Expert, strateg...

What should meaningful and productive tutoring actually accomplish?
It should do more than help a student complete today’s assignment. It should strengthen foundational skills, stretch thinking, build independence, and prepare the student to approach unfamiliar challenges with greater confidence.
In my latest APA blog, I explore how intentional instruction develops capable, adaptable, and critical thinkers, not simply students who can produce the correct answer.
Read more to discover why effective tutoring should expand what a student’s mind can do.
Tutoring Should Do More Than Help Students Finish Their Work: It Should Expand What Their Minds Can Do.
Developmental psychologist Dr. Robert Kegan, author of In Over Our Heads, explored an important idea: growth is not simply about learning more information. It is also about developing greater mental capacity, the ability to understand complexity, consider different perspectives, make meaning, and re...

What an incredible week at APA Summer Camp! ☀️📚❤️
We are feeling so grateful after one of the most amazing camps filled with learning, laughter, hard work, and unforgettable moments.
Our teachers poured their hearts into every child, creating a supportive environment where each student felt encouraged, capable, and excited to learn. The children worked hard, played hard, challenged themselves, built confidence, and made wonderful progress.
A heartfelt thank-you to our incredible teachers, helpers, families, and, most importantly, each and every child who joined us. You made this week so special.
Somehow, we always seem to end up with the very best kids and this group was exceptional! We are so thankful for the opportunity to be part of their learning journey and to make a positive difference in their lives.
This is what APA Summer Camps are all about: helping children learn, grow, connect, and discover just how capable they really are! 🌟
