With our fall/winter Downy Woodpecker class now underway it’s time to think about what’s next. I have a few great ideas but would really love to hear from you. I’ve posted some photos of past projects so you can see what we’ve done before. What else should I do?
If you could pick any bird and pose for a class subject what would it be?
We’ll be starting another combined in-house/Zoom class in late January. Whatever project we decide to do I will need to get to work on it real soon. Leave a comment - who knows? Looking forward to seeing what each of you would like to see…

What a great start to our Downy Woodpecker class - 13 students - 8 in-class and 5 by Zoom! We got all the lines drawn in and managed to block in the turned and tilted head. Very technical start to this rather challenging pose. Everyone did great! Next week it will really start taking shape.

Summer is in full swing here in Saskatchewan- it’s Exhibition week in Saskatoon. We only have two seasons here: winter and Exhibition Week!
We’ll be demonstrating carving and woodburning at the fine arts pavilion Saturday and Sunday evenings as well as next Wednesday evening. Just finished up a woodburning piece for our classes this fall. This is from a black bear I photographed in Banff last month. More details to come. Also pretty much finished the Downy woodpecker for this fall’s class as well.

A little sneak preview of the fall/winter class coming in October. Eight in-person spots at our classroom in Martensville as well as spaces for those wanting to join us live via Zoom every Tuesday morning. Details will be posted on our website (mapleandbass.com) before the end of August or send us a message through our website and we’ll contact you with details.
What bird are we doing? Comment if you know.
The project will feature a somewhat complex pose with a turned and tilted head and slightly twisted tail. We’ll also be making toes and carving the base of your choice for either a table top or a wall-mounted piece.
I’ve been having fun carving and texturing this little guy for the past few days and mounting him on his base ( he doesn’t have his toes yet). Looking forward to painting him and sharing my techniques with you this fall.

Bald Eagle painting
Our class officially ended last week but I am continuing on with the painting steps that have been demonstrated over the past 4 weeks. My painting technique involves several layers of thin paint, alternating between the light (for now that’s unbleached titanium) and dark (burnt umber). Building up layers makes it fairly easy to create soft transitions. Today I worked with the unbleached titanium to selectively lighten up various areas of the wing feathers as well as painting the main feather shafts almost white. Next time I’ll work with the burnt umber washes to tone down any areas that are too light. Here’s a few close up photos of the painting so far.

Carving a soaring Bald Eagle week 19
AKA Painting the Bald Eagle week 4
Our last class! It’s been a blast working on these eagles since January. We’ve had 57 hours of class time and students have done over 3 hours of homework for each hour in class, meaning that they’ve put in close to 200 hours on this project. Some of them did 2 birds! They all did great.
Today I demonstrated all of the small final things necessary in order to finish the painting. Much of the painting has been done using thin wash coats in many layers in order to achieve a realistic feather look.
I still have some final touches to do on my birds and will do one more post when they are all done.
This class and an earlier Saw Whet owl class from last fall should be available through our website ( mapleandbass.com )later this fall.
Thanks to everyone who has been following this project and thanks for your likes and comments. A reminder to check out our maple and bass YouTube channel.
