This is a foundational alteration skill β and once you nail it, you'll be doing it on EVERYTHING. Here's the quick method:
π Follow steps in tutorial as directed and do not adlib- you may create more work than needed
π Do leave a bit extra in seam allowances for future letting out
π Press sewn areas for a professional finish
β οΈ IMPORTANT: Always cut LESS than you think. You can always go back in. You can't add fabric back!
Charge $40β$80+ for a dress alterations depending on complexity.

Most people skip the prep work and then wonder why their first few jobs feel stressful. Here's the simple checklist to get business-ready:

Complete at least 3 practice projects on each technique you're offering

Write down your pricing BEFORE anyone asks (use our wage benchmarks!)

Set up a simple way to collect payment (Venmo, e-transfer, PayPal)
β
Take before/after photos of every piece you alter
β
Create a basic record of what you charged and how long it took
That's it. That's your launch checklist.
No LLC. No website. No fancy business cards. Just skills, confidence, and a system.

You don't need a $5,000 setup to start an alterations business. Here's what you ACTUALLY need βοΈ
The real starter kit (under $100 total):

A good seam ripper β your best friend, I promise
β
Sharp scissors β fabric only, never paper!
β
Tailor's chalk or marking pen
β
Measuring tape (get 2 β always lose one π)
β
Assorted hand sewing needles
β
Thread in neutral colors: black, white, navy, beige
β
Straight ball pins and a pin cushion
β
A basic iron and pressing cloth
That's it. That's the foundation.
Everything else is an upgrade β not a requirement.
START with what you have. Learn the skills. THEN invest in better tools as your income grows.
