Your alterations business can start in a corner of your bedroom. Seriously!! 🏠✂️

You don't need a retail space or a rented studio. You need:

✅ A flat surface for cutting (a table + cutting mat works)
✅ Your sewing machine and an iron
✅ Good lighting (natural or daylight bulb)
✅ A small rack or storage for client garments
✅ A mirror for fittings (even a $15 full-length one is fine)

That's it. That's a functioning alterations workspace.

Start small. Keep it organized. Let the income grow first — THEN upgrade.

Some of the most successful alterations professionals I know started at a kitchen table and built up over time. The space doesn't matter nearly as much as the skill.

The invisible hem is the mark of a REAL alterations professional. ✨

Clients can spot a bad hem from across the room. But a perfect invisible hem? The garment looks like it was made that way.

Here's how it works- NO HAND SEWING needed:

🔹 Invest in a professional blind hemmer- portable model will do
🔹 Learn to create invisible hemming stitch with your domestic machine
🔹 Hand sew only super fine silky garments that may not work on blind hemmer
🔹 Press again when done

The goal: when the garment is worn, not a single stitch is visible from the outside.

It takes practice. But when you get it? You'll have clients coming back EVERY time.

🧵 DRESS TOO LOOSE? Here's how to take it in at the sides!

This is a foundational alteration skill — and once you nail it, you'll be doing it on EVERYTHING. Here's the quick method:

📌 Follow steps in tutorial as directed and do not adlib- you may create more work than needed
📌 Do leave a bit extra in seam allowances for future letting out
📌 Press sewn areas for a professional finish

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Always cut LESS than you think. You can always go back in. You can't add fabric back!

Charge $40–$80+ for a dress alterations depending on complexity.

Before you charge your first client, do THIS. 🧵

Most people skip the prep work and then wonder why their first few jobs feel stressful. Here's the simple checklist to get business-ready:

✅ Complete at least 3 practice projects on each technique you're offering
✅ Write down your pricing BEFORE anyone asks (use our wage benchmarks!)
✅ Set up a simple way to collect payment (Venmo, e-transfer, PayPal)
✅ Take before/after photos of every piece you alter
✅ Create a basic record of what you charged and how long it took

That's it. That's your launch checklist.
