2026 Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì Symposium Report Highlights Shared Vision for Language Revitalization

The 2026 Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì Symposium (Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì Gha Ełets’ehdèe) recently concluded in Behchokǫ̀ and marked an important milestone in the ongoing work to protect, strengthen, and revitalize Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì. Over three days, the symposium brought together 248 participants from across the Tłı̨chǫ region and Yellowknife, including fluent speakers, youth, educators and researchers, in a strong show of shared commitment to intergenerational language learning.

From honouring language champions such as Jimmy Rabesca for his 60 years of service to exploring new digital tools and approaches for language revitalization, the symposium reflected both the strength of Tłı̨chǫ Yatıì today and the opportunities ahead. The gathering highlighted how the language continues to live in our homes, schools, workplaces, and communities, while also pointing to the importance of immersion programs, leadership, and everyday language use as key priorities for the future.
