Finishing a movement session with a down‑regulation position — like lying on your back with your legs up the wall — isn’t just “calming.” It’s actually a nervous‑system reset.
When kids move, jump, push, pull, climb, or do any kind of energizing activity, their bodies shift into a more sympathetic state (the “get things done” part of the nervous system). Before transitioning to the next activity, especially something quieter or more focused, their bodies need help shifting gears.
Legs‑up‑the‑wall activates the baroreflex, slows the heart rate, and signals safety to the brain. It also stimulates the vagus nerve, reduces sensory load, and gives the vestibular system a break. All of that helps the body move from “high energy” into parasympathetic calm.
This is why I always end movement sessions with a down‑regulation moment. It helps kids settle, regulate, and transition without crashing or becoming overwhelmed. It’s a simple position with a big impact on nervous‑system stability.
Movement → down‑regulation → smooth transition.

Teachers — here’s something I wish more classrooms talked about:
Visuals aren’t just “cute organization.”
They’re regulation tools.
They’re communication tools.
They’re nervous system supports.
In my Visual Resource Toolkit, I explain that visuals “reduce cognitive load” and help learners understand expectations without relying on verbal instructions. They “bring clarity, predictability, and calm to daily routines” — especially for neurodivergent students who process information best when it’s visual, concrete, and consistent.
When we make the day visible, we give students:
a sense of safety
a sense of control
smoother transitions
fewer surprises
more independence
Tools like First/Then boards, Now/Next/Then, Time‑Passing visuals, and Choice Boards aren’t about compliance — they’re about co‑regulation, autonomy, and helping students feel prepared instead of overwhelmed.
And when expectations are visible, adults can shift from correcting to supporting. Your toolkit literally says visuals “promote calm, connected interactions” — and that’s exactly what I see in classrooms using them.
If you’re curious about how these tools work, I share examples, tips, and gentle regulation strategies over on Instagram.
And if you want to explore the full Visual Resource Toolkit, everything is linked in my Linktree — including my TPT shop.

What Empower Mindful Moves Is & Why Professionals Use It
Professionals who support kids — teachers, CYWs, OTs, SLPs, mental health clinicians — here’s something I’ve learned after years in classrooms and therapy spaces:
Kids don’t just need instructions.
They need nervous system support.
They need clarity, predictability, and movement.
That’s why I created Empower Mindful Moves — a full ecosystem of visual, movement, and regulation tools designed for neurodivergent learners, mixed‑ability classrooms, and kids who communicate through behavior, movement, or emotion long before words.
If you work with learners who need:
visual schedules
First/Then boards
Now/Next/Then
AAC supports
PECS communication tools
regulation strategies
sensory pathways
movement‑based resets
calm corner tools
autonomy visuals
co‑regulation scripts
…you’ll find all of that (and more) in my resource library.
Professionals use Empower Mindful Moves because the tools are:
ND‑affirming (no compliance language)
gentle + low‑stim (soft colors, rounded shapes)
trauma‑informed (predictability lowers overwhelm)
movement‑based (supports the nervous system directly)
clear + concrete (reduces cognitive load)
flexible (works in classrooms, therapy, home, community)
And because the visuals help kids understand:
what’s happening now
what’s coming next
what choices they have
what their body needs
how to regulate safely
If you’re curious about how these tools work, or want to explore the full collection — AAC packs, PECS visuals, regulation kits, movement cards, sensory paths, autonomy supports, calm corner kits, mega bundles — I share everything on Pinterest.
It’s the easiest place to browse my entire ecosystem.
