A beautiful day on the waters to end our summer session. We celebrated Mr Fires birthday as well today. I wish everyone great success heading back to school! May you have a great year back. We are lucky enough to have a small group stick with us to continue their learning journey with 13 moons. 🌑

Our summer cohort is in its final days and what a beautiful way to end off our summer together. This team is exceptional and brilliant. It was designed to build life skills and job readiness training. I am 100% confident that each participant gained that and so much more. They have all completed a college credit in Indigenous Environmental Stewardship through Fanshawe College. Yaw^ko to our many partners. We have one more day together on the water. The ending will be bitter sweet but we have become a family and they know where to come back to visit at anytime. 💦 🎣 🛶 🦌

13 Moons Land-Based Learning, in partnership with Fanshawe College, is pleased to open community registration for Indigenous Arts, Culture & Technologies — a 45-hour accredited course delivered entirely on the land at 13 Moons.

Over 9 consecutive Mondays, students will participate in hands-on land-based learning exploring:

Traditional Haudenosaunee Foodways
Open-Fire & Clay-Pot Cooking
Harvesting & Preparing Natural Clay
Traditional Pottery Making
Hide Preparation & Tanning
Natural Fibres, Wood, Bone & Antler
Traditional Tools & Technologies
Photography, Film & Visual Storytelling
Cultural Teachings, Protocols & Land Relationships

This experiential course introduces learners to Indigenous food sovereignty through Haudenosaunee approaches to seasonal harvesting, traditional food systems and land-based practices.

Throughout the nine weeks, learners will participate in hands-on teachings and activities connected to:

🌽 Three Sisters agriculture & seed stewardship
🌿 Traditional plant and medicine harvesting
🦌 Sustainable hunting & wildlife stewardship
🐟 Fishing & aquatic food systems
🔥 Traditional food preparation & preservation
🦬 Hide preparation & traditional materials
🏺 Clay harvesting & pottery
🥘 Community cooking & food sharing
🌱 Indigenous eco-village food systems, including gardens, smokehouses, food storage and composting

Learning happens where these teachings belong — on the land, through practice, relationship and community.

Learning from Our Mother, the Earth. The land is more than the ground beneath our feet — she is a teacher, a provider, and a relative who has cared for us since time immemorial.

Building a healthy relationship with the land means taking the time to listen, learn, and spend time with her, just as we would with our own mother. Through this relationship, we strengthen our connection to who we are, where we come from, and our responsibilities to care for all that sustains us.

When we nurture our relationship with the Earth, we are reminded of the importance of reciprocity — giving back, showing gratitude, and walking in balance with the land that continues to provide for us.

Winding down from an amazing week of our Q1 land based pedagogy summit! Our theme was land practice and food sovereignty. Quite a remarkable week with heart felt impact that these educators and social workers will take into their practice! Honourable mentions to our elders, knowledge keepers, founders and our summer cohort for making it happen!! We look forward to Q2 in the fall!
