Studies suggest that playing a musical instrument in later life can slow or even reverse brain aging. Research published in PLOS Biology found that older lifelong musicians processed speech in noisy environments with brain activity similar to people decades younger. This is linked to stronger neural connections and a “cognitive reserve” that protects against decline. Experts believe music-making may not only sharpen focus and memory but also help keep dementia at bay.
