The Mistake Isn’t the Problem. What Happens Next Is.
How do mistakes mentally affect your performance in competition?
Do you find it difficult to let go of a mistake and focus on the next opportunity?
Mistakes are inevitable in sport. Missed assignments. Bad decisions. Fouls. Missed shots. Turnovers. Dropped passes.
But rarely is the mistake itself the biggest problem.
It’s what happens AFTER the mistake that matters.
When athletes replay the previous play, worry about making another mistake, or get caught up in what they should have done, their attention gets pulled away from the only thing they can actually influence:
👉 The next opportunity.
The previous play is over. You can’t change it.
What you can control is your response.
4 Tips to Move Past Competition Mistakes:
1️⃣ Own It, Then Release It
Acknowledge the mistake. Identify what you can learn. Then let it go. Accountability helps you learn; dwelling keeps you stuck.
2️⃣ Reset Your Attention
Take a breath and use a simple cue:
🗣️ “Next play.”
🗣️ “Right here, right now.”
Bring your attention back to the present.
3️⃣ Focus on What You Can Control
You can’t change the previous play. Focus instead on your effort, communication, decision-making, mental readiness, and response to the next opportunity.
4️⃣ Commit to the Next Opportunity
Don’t play cautiously because you’re afraid of making another mistake. Trust your preparation. Stay engaged. Commit fully to your next move.
Remember:
A mistake doesn’t define your performance. Your response to it does.
Clear the mind. Reset. Refocus. Commit to the next opportunity.
Because your next opportunity may be just around the corner. 🏒⚽🏀
