DONKEYS.
Yup. They bring me joy.
My Instagram feed right now is donkeys, fat babies, recipe hacks, fitness advice, wrinkly ladies, and funny, less polished quirky humans telling it like it is. Not performing.

(My son Alfie calls me a contrarian. He’s not wrong.)
I’ve been chewing on the word influencer. Who is influencing me? And when exactly did I consciously say yes to that?

So much of what’s being served on socials is people in their 20s and 30s telling us how to live, how to look, how to eat, how to run a business. Some of it is lovely and some of it is wise, and some of it is a version of a life I’m never going to have. Admittedly, I often catch myself leaning into their fresh faced trend alerts, thumb moving, doing nothing about it.

I’m close to 50 now. I’ll take good advice from any age, but more and more I lean toward the people who’ve lived a bit. The ones who’ve lost people, rebuilt something, raised kids and let them go, started over at an age nobody makes Reels about.
They’re usually less polished, the lighting can be dodgy, yet wisdom is excellent.

The algorithm is paying closer attention than I am. It shows me what I linger on, and what I linger on is usually what I’m hungry for.
Which makes it worth a look.

Scroll yours for thirty seconds today. Who keeps showing up? What are they selling you (and I don’t mean the product)? Is it a life you’re building, or one you’re watching?

I showed you mine, donkeys and all.
👆🏼Tell me three things in your feed.

A treasure map you say?

Yup. A visual tool for mapping the year ahead. Idea babies, goals, habits, rhythms, relationships, numbers. All of it.
The ability to zoom into the micro and the macro.

I lovingly call it a vision board on rails:)

I have been noodling this product for myself over the past years.

I’ll be sharing how I build it.
Stay tuned.

Anyone else feel like September is the new year?
I’m navigating heaps of change over here.
Will be dropping some tools and shares on how I move through my own shifts and make sure not to drift into autopilot.

Send me a msg.
Love to hear what is happening for you this September?

CONSIDER

The best travel question isn’t “where should I go?”

It’s “who should I go with?” - and “will this place meet me where I actually am?”

This pic is from 2014, I was spent. Burned out. Health in decline. Done with doing all the things.

We made a choice that felt radical: pulled our kids from school, sidestepped convention, and traveled the world as a family. A quadruple bypass of a different kind.

Japan was first. And Japan held me in ways I didn’t know I needed.

It offered stillness and chaos. Rest and adventure. The permission to be both completely depleted and completely curious.

I’ve taken trips to extraordinary places that left me empty. I’ve had ordinary dinners in unremarkable cities that cracked me open. The difference is always the humans - and whether the place itself knows how to hold you.

This May, I get to return. And this time, Charlie ( ) and I are bringing 8 people with us.

He shapes what we see. I shape how we connect. Together, we’re creating something I wish had existed when I needed it most.

6 spots filled. 2 remain.

Link in bio if this is speaking to something you haven’t said out loud yet.

It’s been a while since I introduced myself.

My name is Hope Paterson. I’m a Threshold Coach (affectionately called Guide for Big Lives by my clients:)

But that title doesn’t tell you much. So here are 10 things that might surprise you:

1. I was born in Canada. We moved to London, England and I attended boarding school in the countryside at 8 years old. Not as punishment. As my dream. I wanted to be surrounded by kids from everywhere. That choice launched a lifelong obsession with global connection.
2. At 23, I ran my own 100-seat restaurant in Laos. It became the hub for backpackers on the Southeast Asia circuit. Thrilling. Exhausting. I swore I’d never work in food again.
3. I broke that promise. Moved to Bangkok at 24, developed a cooking program for schools, brought it to Canada, then became the first employee of a trailblazing kids food company.
3. In 2014, I went out on my own as a coach and consultant. That same year, my husband and I took our kids (ages 3 and 5) on a six-month trip around the world. People thought we were crazy.
4. In 2018, we did it again. Bigger. A full year and called it our Quadruple Bypass. 24 countries. Our kids were 7 and 9. We landed in Bali, discovered the Green School, and pulled the trigger to stay.
5. I spent that year in the humid jungle working with coaching clients online and dabbling in Spagyric Alchemy. (Look it up. It’s wild.)
6. We built our dream house in Quebec five years ago. It’s not the jungle, but it’s become the root system our whole family needed.
7. I used to seriously dislike writing. Now it’s central to everything I do. I write regularly on Substack (HopeSparks) if you want to come along.
8. My two kids have left home. At 48, I’m officially an empty nester.
9. 2025, I threw myself into AI leadership. Not just learning it. Teaching it. Leading trainings, workshops that combine AI with the inner work of transformation. Weird combo? Not if you want to truly leverage AI and stay human.
10. I love to make up words. And my motto in life is to Fajondilize. This means to be elbows deep in whatever you’re doing. And to commit to whatever happens next.

Slips from a year of untangles, clarity, adventure, grief, expansion, purpose, and love.

2025. This year was rich.
I won’t forget it.
What I gained and lost. Etched into squishy heart.

I did something I haven’t done in a long time.

I hand-picked a small group of women for BUILD WITH HOPE—a 4-week journey where we’re learning AI tools (capabilities) while building the inner tools (capacity) to integrate them without overwhelm.

No big launch. No automated funnel. Just personal invitations to people I knew were ready.

Here’s what I’m learning from incredible builders like and practicing with my 1:1 clients like :

AI is powerful. But it’s not just about the tools—it’s about the mindset shifts, the reframes, the nervous system work that lets you actually USE them in a way that works for YOU.

(Sidebar to my fellow Gen Xers: Let’s be honest—we can avoid learning new tools, telling ourselves “this isn’t relevant” or “it’ll go away.” I’m afraid AI isn’t going anywhere.)

By mid-November, this BUILD WITH HOPE group will have:

✅ Personalized AI assistants trained on their own expertise
✅ Shifted from frozen → in motion and feeling inspired
✅ Built new ways to leverage AI for their work and life
✅ Connected with other women navigating the same threshold

This cohort is full. But there will be more.

If you’re asking: How do I weave AI in without losing myself? How do I leverage it without burning out?—I’m building something for you.

👉 Comment if this resonates. I’d love to hear what lands.

In your corner,
Hope 🌟

You Can’t Hack Grief
There’s no shortcut through grief. No productivity system, no optimization, no five-step framework that makes it manageable or neat.
When you’re in grief, you’re in it—fully, messily, unavoidably. There’s no working your way out, no controlling the timeline, no tool that makes it disappear. The only way is to be with it. Present. Feeling what hurts.
Sometimes there are small seeds of joy tucked inside the ache. But mostly, it just hurts.

As humans, we’re wired to stay busy, to avoid, to distract ourselves from feelings that don’t feel good. We numb. We manage. We keep moving.

But grief doesn’t respond to our strategies. It lodges itself in. I’ve witnessed this hundreds of times—coaching people through transitions and thresholds that carry grief in their wake. And what I know is this:

—You can’t hack grief.

But you can receive love. You can let people care for you. You can practice the profound vulnerability of letting others see you in your raw, broken-open moments.
It doesn’t take the grief away. It doesn’t change how you feel. But it reminds you of one of the greatest truths about being human: we were never meant to carry these things alone.
Right now, I’m practicing receiving. Learning to let love in, even when I can’t fix what hurts.
Maybe you are too.

“Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final.”
— Rainer Maria Rilke
