We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life following the recent school shooting in British Columbia. As educators and members of a community devoted to children, this news touches us deeply. We hold the victims, their families, and the entire school community in our thoughts, and we extend our sincere condolences to all who are grieving and supporting one another through this profound loss.

Schools are meant to be places of safety, belonging, and hope. For many children, school is not only where they learn, but where they feel most secure, most understood, and most connected. As a community, we all share the responsibility to protect these spaces so they remain safe havens for every child. In this difficult moment, we stand in quiet solidarity with the community, sending compassion, strength, and care as they begin the long path toward healing.

What a wonderful start to 2026!

We are always so proud of how quickly the children adjust back into the school routine after some time away. Our environments truly are meant to feel like a home away from home and I think that plays a huge role in how quickly the children adjust back into the routine.

The children in both our young children’s community and Casa program have been creating beautiful work. Check out some moments from this month. 🩵

Today we mark the anniversary of a pivotal moment in the history of education: the opening of the first Casa dei Bambini on January 6, 1907.

In the San Lorenzo district of Rome, Dr. Maria Montessori was invited to oversee a small group of children who had previously been overlooked by the educational system. What emerged from this modest beginning was not simply a classroom, but a profound shift in how we understand childhood, learning, and human potential.

Within the walls of that first Children’s House, Montessori observed something remarkable. When children were offered freedom within a carefully prepared environment, meaningful work, and deep respect for their developmental needs, they revealed concentration, independence, and joy in learning that challenged long-held assumptions about education. These observations became the foundation of what would grow into the Montessori approach, an approach grounded not in theory alone, but in careful scientific observation of the child.

More than a century later, the legacy of the Casa dei Bambini continues to shape classrooms across the world. Its influence reaches far beyond materials or methods. It reminds us that education is ultimately an act of trust, trust in the child’s innate drive to learn, to contribute, and to become.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we are invited to return to the essence of Montessori’s work, to observe more closely, to prepare environments with intention, and to honour the child as an active participant in their own development.

From a single room in Rome to a global movement, it all began with a simple yet radical idea: follow the child.

It’s so important to give back to the community especially during the holidays and we were overwhelmed with the contributions made by our little community at Kingston Montessori.

Our Casa students have been busy learning about plants. They became interested in the plants in the classroom and started to care for them. They discovered that our spider plant had started propagating, ironically with 5 new growths one for each children to transplant in their own pot.

Caring for the classroom plants sparked an interest amongst all the children and our wonderful Casa guide brought in some maple and chestnut saplings from their home garden and planted them with the children. The children discussed the lifecycle of a plant and read many books to learn about this process.

This has been such a wonderful learning experience for our young Casa students. When we follow the child’s lead these beautiful outcomes are possible. 🌱

Some beautiful moments capturing deep concentration.

Montessori environments are carefully designed to support and promote concentration. The environment is prepared to meet the child’s interests and abilities and the materials are designed to allow the child to work independently. Through independent work, the children are able to focus on their activity without interruption, which ultimately allows the development of concentration to happen. Concentration allows the child to truly absorb the activity or concept at hand in their own way and time. When we sit back and let the child lead we allow for more moments of concentration.

“The child who concentrates is immensely happy.” - Maria Montessori
