🌿 International Women’s Day 🌿
Roots & Wings Support Services

Today we celebrate the strength, resilience, and compassion of women everywhere.

At Roots & Wings, we have the privilege of working with so many incredible women — mothers, caregivers, educators, and advocates — who show up every single day for the children in their lives, often while carrying invisible challenges of their own.

We see you.

We see the late nights researching how to support your child.
We see the school meetings where you advocate fiercely.
We see the exhaustion, the love, the patience, and the determination.

Supporting a neurodivergent child takes courage, creativity, and an enormous heart. The women who walk this path are some of the strongest people we know.

Today we celebrate you — the mothers growing strong roots for their children while helping them spread their wings.

You are doing meaningful, important work.
And you don’t have to do it alone.

✨ Happy International Women’s Day ✨

Wednesday Check-In 🤍

In Ontario, parents of children with exceptional needs often carry a mental load most people never see.

Research consistently shows that caregivers—most often mothers—of neurodivergent and high-needs children experience:

• Significantly higher levels of chronic stress and burnout
• Increased rates of anxiety and depression compared to other parents
• Ongoing emotional labour tied to advocacy, coordination, and “being on alert”
• A second (or third) unpaid job navigating systems, services, and paperwork

Many parents are simultaneously:
🧠 advocates
💼 working professionals
📚 case managers
📞 coordinators of care
❤️ emotional regulators
🛡️ protectors of their child’s dignity and well-being

And most are doing all of this quietly—while still showing up, loving fiercely, and trying to hold everything together.

This isn’t about parents not being resilient enough.
It’s about the weight of responsibility being heavy.

At Roots & Wings, we believe supporting children also means supporting the adults who carry them through the system every day—because no one should have to do this alone.

If today feels heavy, that makes sense.
You’re not weak.
You’re carrying a lot. 🌱

Thursday Truth 💬

Waiting shouldn’t be the hardest part of getting support…
but for so many families, it is.

Months.
Sometimes years.
Endless forms.
Assessments.
Waitlists that move painfully slowly.

And all the while, your child is growing, struggling, learning, changing — now, not someday when funding finally arrives.

We hear this every week:

“We’re approved… but still waiting.”
“We qualify… but there’s no timeline.”
“We’ve been told to just hang on.”

Here’s the truth we want you to hear today:
✨ Your child’s needs are valid right now
✨ You’re not failing because the system is slow
✨ Needing support before funding comes through does not make you impatient or entitled — it makes you a parent paying attention

At Roots & Wings, we see the gap between eligibility and actual help — and how heavy that gap can feel. You’re not alone in it, and you don’t have to navigate it silently.

If this resonates, know that we’re holding space for you 🤍

🌱 Tuesday Truth 🌱

Two things can be true at the same time.

Your child can be trying their absolute best
and still having a really hard time.

You can be patient and loving
and completely exhausted.

Progress doesn’t always look like calm voices and smooth days.
Sometimes it looks like showing up again after a hard moment.

At Roots & Wings, we hold space for the both/and—
because growth isn’t about perfection, it’s about compassion, understanding, and support.

💬 What’s a “two things can be true” moment you’ve noticed lately?

One of the hardest truths for us parents is this: we don’t fully know our children.

Not because we don’t love them enough.
Or we don’t live under the same roof, share meals, routines, laughter, but because no human being is ever fully visible to another - especially their inner world.
We often assume that asking questions is enough.
"How was your day? Are you okay? Tell me what’s going on."
But questions don’t always unlock what lives inside a young person.
Sometimes words aren’t available yet.
Sometimes fear gets there first.
Sometimes they don’t know how to explain their thoughts or the heaviness they carry.
What matters more than questions is safety.
Your child - a teenager or young adult - needs to know, deeply and without doubt, that there is nothing they can say or feel that will make them unlovable, unacceptable, or “too much.”
Nothing is too dark, too shameful, too scary, embarrassing, or wrong.
They need to believe: I won’t be fixed, judged, dismissed, or panicked away.
I’ll be held, & loved no matter what.

When that safety exists, talking may come.
And when it doesn’t, silence can become a very lonely place.

At Talkchild, we believe that staying connected with your kids starts with feeling safe. Because sometimes, what saves a life isn’t the right question,
it’s knowing there’s a place where everything can be said.

🌱 Two Things Can Be True at Once 🕊️

You can love your child deeply and feel completely overwhelmed.
You can feel grateful for your role and exhausted by it.
You can find joy in something that also brings stress.
You can feel relief… and still feel stretched thin.

None of this makes you ungrateful.
None of this means you’re failing.

It means you’re human.
It means you’re holding a lot.

At Roots & Wings, we see this every day—especially for parents of neurodivergent children. The very things that bring purpose, meaning, and connection can also be the source of burnout, worry, and overwhelm.

✨ Both truths deserve space.
✨ Both truths are valid.

You don’t have to choose one feeling over the other.
You’re allowed to hold both—and still ask for support.

🤍 You’re not alone. We’re here to help you grow strong, together.

As we step into a new year, we’re taking a moment to pause and reflect.

This past year has been filled with big emotions, small victories, hard conversations, and quiet moments of growth. We’ve had the privilege of walking alongside children, parents, and caregivers as they navigated challenges, celebrated progress, and showed up—even on the days it felt heavy.

At Roots & Wings and Creative & Playful Counselling, we believe growth doesn’t have to be loud to be meaningful. Sometimes it looks like a child trying again. A parent advocating one more time. A family choosing connection over perfection.

As we move into this new year, our intention remains the same:
🌱 To support with compassion
🌱 To meet families where they are
🌱 To offer practical tools alongside empathy
🌱 To honour each child’s unique way of moving through the world

If the new year feels hopeful, uncertain, overwhelming—or all of the above—you’re not alone. We’re grateful to be part of your journey and look forward to continuing this work together.

Here’s to another year of growing strong roots and helping wings take flight 🤍
