“Kwe’, my name is Nichelle. I’m a second year nursing student at NSCC from Eskasoni First Nation and I am proud to call myself Mi’kmaq. Originally I found a passion for beading as a hobby! Now, I work closely with other artists’ who have inspired me to continue growing my skills and share my work!”

All are welcome to attend the the 2024 TD LinkUp Wrap, a collaborative event between Light House Arts Centre and Indigenous Futures Canada! This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow creatives and community builders.

This evening will bring together a distinguished group of creatives, professionals, and entrepreneurs for an engaging discussion about the future of Indigenous entrepreneurship and leadership. A panel discussion will include discussions with leaders Chris Googoo, Bernard Burton, and Carol Ann Potter, followed by a special performance by MAEP Indigenous Emerging Artists.

Celebrate the growing success of Indigenous leadership in the arts, business, and entrepreneurship sectors. This exciting initiative is part of an ongoing effort to engage with the Indigenous community, and will include attendance from MLAs, City Councillors, leaders, and allies from across the Indigenous, arts, culture, entrepreneurship, and environment sectors.

There will be a wide range of unique arts and crafts, featuring artists; Seatherny Arts, Little L’nu, Tribal Vibe - Nature's Tea, Sydney Wreaks Art, and Nichelle Googoo from Shell Beads

🧡 In honour of Mi’kmaq History Month, the Gallery also would like to introduce you to Phyllis Googoo, whose story was the inspiration for the name “Po’ks Pop-Up”. Phyllis was a well-respected Mi’kmaw woman and Indian Residental School survivor from We’koqma’q First Nation.

At the age of 4, Phyllis was sent to Shubenacadie Residental School, where she remained for a decade and learned quickly that speaking Mi’kmaq was not permitted.

Since she was unable to understand English, Phyllis felt isolated from the other children when she first arrived. While walking through the fields, she found some Po’ks (ladybugs) and this loneliness she was experiencing inspired her to speak to them in Mi’kmaq secretly. Through this, Phyllis was able to preserve her fluency in Mi’kmaq. Although her vocabulary was limited at first, she was later able to make friends with a group of children who also spoke Mi’kmaq in secret.
