A research program studying long-term care in Atlantic Canada

06/01/2026

We are pleased to share that Dr. Marilyn Hodgins will be presenting at the 37th International Nursing Research Congress in Toronto.

Her research examines factors that influence long-term care nurses’ intent to stay.

Our research shows that care aides who have recently arrived in Canada often report better mental health, lower stress, and lower anxiety compared to those who have been in Canada for longer.

As long-term care continues to recruit internationally, it is equally important to ensure newcomers feel supported, welcomed, and able to stay. Creating inclusive workplaces and stronger community connections can make a difference.

Big congratulations to research assistant Dina Sallam on winning “Best Student Poster Design” at the Northwood Research Symposium (April 30).

Did you know we held three test screenings of our first video? Dina’s impactful presentation highlighted why including end-users in our video development process matters – showcasing how their input directly shaped the message we shared, the visuals we chose, and the pacing of the story. Those insights have carried forward and will continue to shape our future videos.

Way to go Dina! You can watch our videos on our social media page. More videos to come this spring and summer.

Last week some of our team had the chance to attend and present at the Northwood Research Symposium – and what an inspiring day it was!

It was great to connect with others across the sector, share our work, and learn about the incredible research happening around us.

Opportunities like this remind us how powerful it is to come together, exchange knowledge, and keep pushing the work forward.

The mental health of our long-term care workforce matters. A core part of our work focuses on understanding the well-being of the long-term care workers and identifying areas for improvement. Watch for new research findings to be shared here and on our website.

We often hear that many long-term care workers are leaving their jobs – this is a problem for everyone living and working in long-term care homes.

Our research shows that workplace culture plays a key role in whether staff stay or go. When care aides, nurses, and managers feel supported, valued, and empowered, they are more likely to remain in their roles. Improving long-term care means looking beyond individual solutions and focusing on creating healthier, more supportive work environments.

We would love to hear your feedback! Complete our 2-minute questionnaire to help us improve our videos and tell us what topics you want us to explore next.
