Meet the Kindred Critters!
ππΎππΎπ
It's time to properly introduce this lovely little lady. This is Matilda, the Leopard Tortoise!
She joined our family in December 2025, she's almost 2 years old, and has a LOT of growing to do!
In Nova Scotia you must have a permit to keep turtles and tortoises as pets. This is due to the invasive nature of turtle species such as Red Eared Sliders, and the specialized care requirements and long life spans of exotic tortoise species.
We obtained a permit from the Government of Nova Scotia to keep Matilda. We took her in after her original owners moved to Nova Scotia and were looking to rehome their tortoises. They had contacted the Museum of Natural History to see if they could take them in, but they're at tortoise capacity with Gus! But it was thanks to that inquiry that we learned about the tortoises in need!

Leopard Tortoises get their name from the markings on their shell which resemble a leopard's spots. They are considered the 4th largest tortoise species in the world (which is why we say Matilda has a lot of growing left to do!), they can live 80-100 years, and get to be 12-24 inches in length! They come from Africa and require a high temperature in their enclosure, and a lot of space to roam!

If you want to meet Matilda be sure to request her when booking a visit from Kindred Critters!

It's the Potato Girls! Tater Tot and Waffle Fry!
Wondering where these potato themed names came from? Here's the story:
These two little ladies came to us from The Rat Rescue Network NS. A wonderful network of folks who help to rescue and rehome precious rats from a variety of situations.
These two were discovered with their brother rat when they were still just babies, outside on a walking trail behind a fast food restaurant.
Thankfully the person who saw them scurry under a bush realized that wild rats are not white, so they knew these 3 didn't belong out there!
They coaxed the little babies out from under the bush using french fries they got at the restaurant (that's why they were named after different fry types!) and took them to the wonderful folks at the Rat Rescue.
Their brother (Chips) neeed to be adopted into a home with other male rats, but we took these two in to introduce to our girls Daphne and Velma!
They are the sweetest girls, and the introductions went super well! They are inseperable often all piling into the same hammock to snuggle together to sleep.
We are so happy to have them as a part of the family!
There are so many exotic pets out there in need of new homes, so we always say Adopt, don't shop! ππΎ
If you want to meet these 2 little ladies yourself be sure to request them when you book your next event! π₯ππ

This little one is Tater Tot, she's Waffle Fry's sister!
She's a chocolate brown dumbo rat. The name dumbo comes from the round shape of the ears and the fact that they are set on the side of the head rather than on top! Our other rat Velma is also a dumbo!
She is such a calm, gentle, and smart little rat! Introducing her and her sister to Daphne and Velma was such a breeze, they were so excited to have new friends!
Keep an eye out for our next post where we'll tell Tater Tot and Waffle Fry's story, which explains their names! π₯π

This is Twizzler!
He is a milk snake, which is a species of King Snake.
His beautiful colours are his way of "playing pretend". The milk snake has evolved to have this specific colouration to try and trick predators into thinking it's venomous. Using this mimicry their markings make them appear similar to the venomous coral snake.
But milk snakes aren't venmous at all!
Twizzler was rehomed to us as his owner didn't have enough space to keep him anymore.
His favourite thing to do is immediately find his way into the nice warm shirt of whoever is holding him during presentations!
