If they asked you this question, would it make you cry or hit them? Sociologist Kenneth Doka calls the grief associated with Parental Alienation disenfranchised grief, a loss that is not openly acknowledged, publicly mourned, or socially supported. Targeted parents often face judgment from peers or family members who wrongly assume, “If your child won’t talk to you, you must have done something terrible.”
Let’s test how smart that assumption is…
Let’s test how smart it is to ask an alienated parent what they did wrong based on real cases.
What did Brady Harmon of Utah do wrong that his children “don’t want to talk to him”?
Brady Harmon was involved in a long and contentious custody battle with his ex-wife, Sarah Myers, who raised their four children in New York while he lived in Utah. Myers continually sabotaged the children’s relationship with Brady through a series of false allegations and other gatekeeping tactics.
Despite her sabotage, the courts granted Harmon summer custody, and his children were scheduled to visit him in Utah starting July 1, 2026.
Before their scheduled visit, Myers and Steadman, the mother and grandmother, kiIIed the four children and committed sciiude. Authorities found notes left by the grandmother stating she believed kiIIing the children was the only way to "keep them safe" from alleged abuse in Utah.
So how smart is the most popular question to ask alienated dads like Brady?
What did alienated dad, Brady, do wrong that his children “don’t want to talk to him” anymore?
