The Village Loom is an alternative children's program combining child-directed learning and mentorship, in the village and wilderness landscapes of Eden Mills.

In very small groups, children will have time to explore their creative interests and grow.

Women's circle has changed to first Saturday of the month! Join us to write silently in the yurt or outside around the fire, and then share you thoughts and work. Prompts are provided, and ample opportunities to share ideas and projects, and to get feedback. When the weather warms, outdoor spots by the river and in the woods will be open to writing!

Pretty magical, the real winter that this winter brought! How we move and navigate, how we walk through space, all of that changes with this amount of snow, so interesting to observe in the body!

Teaching and mentoring is a fine art. Using Piaget's emphasis on self-directed learning with Vygotsky's ideas that adult guidance and tool and knowledge sharing are necessary in transfering real skills, there is a nice balance that preserves a child's intrinsic motivation. They can make more than we are aware they can make, but they do need guided assistance with developing new skills.

We've started helping others start their own neighbourhood programs for nature based skill-sharing and to supplement school. Drawing on rich knowledge and skills from people in your own neighbourhoods - whether rural or urban - and figuring out how to best share those skills: could be a program for kids and their families, or weekly get togethers, or an organized storytelling circle.

Our previous compost system was a bit neglected...and thus smelly. With Karen Houle's help (art of soil collective https://artofsoil.ca/) we started a new two-bin system, and it's not stinky! Kids had a great time using nails and other hand tools to help build, and took a great interest in how essential soil is to all of life.
