Wabanaki Mural; Rooted in Community, Language & Welcome

Danielle Moutlon is a Wolastoqey/ Mi'kmaq visual artist from Neqotkuk First Nation who is inspired by nature and the world around her. She shares the significance of her art shared in her mural: Fiddleheads are a subject I hold especially close to my heart. They remind me of time spent picking, cleaning, preparing, and enjoying them with family, loved ones, and community.

I admire the way fiddleheads grow facing one another, emerging from strong roots and surrounded by the growth that came before them. To me, this carries a powerful generational significance, a reminder that we are rooted in those who came before us, nourished by our connections, and continually growing together.

The fiddleheads symbolize growth, togetherness, family, community, and Wolastoqey tradition. 🌿

The addition of the snake came through a conversation Danielle had with Elder Gina Brooks from Sitansisk. When I asked her about something that could represent Sitansisk, she shared that the Snake Dance is also a welcoming dance. The snake felt like the perfect addition, a symbol of welcome, connection, and creating a space where staff and youth feel welcomed and supported as they enter the training space.

This mural is more than artwork on a wall. It carries stories, teachings, relationships, and a connection to the land and community.
