At 16, I moved to Michigan and spent a year studying at an American high school. 🇺🇸

I lived with a host family, went to Swan Valley High School and experienced the American school life I had previously only imagined.

Getting there took applications, documents, IELTS preparation and a lot of work.

Later, my international education journey continued in London at King’s College London, and I was also accepted to UCLA with a significant scholarship.

I created EVO Study to share what I learned along the way and make the U.S. education process easier to understand for other international students.

This page is where I’ll share both sides of that journey: how to get there — and what happens once you do.

Finding a U.S. high school is much easier when you know where to look.
Two useful websites to start with:

• Niche — school profiles, rankings, student and parent reviews, academics, extracurriculars, location and student diversity data. Niche
• GreatSchools — school ratings, academic performance, college readiness, enrollment data and student demographics. greatschools.org

These websites can help you compare schools, neighborhoods and student populations before creating your shortlist.
But they are only a starting point.
I collected more school-search websites, application platforms and useful resources in my USA High School Admission Guide.

My Favorite Class in an American High School

One of the biggest differences between my school back home and my American high school was the variety of classes.

Students have the opportunity to choose from many electives based on their interests, which makes school much more enjoyable and personal.

During my exchange year, I took classes like:

Anatomy
Math
English
American History
Pottery
Art
Cooking
Media Studies
Senior Book

Every class was completely different.

In Cooking, we prepared different recipes and learned basic cooking techniques.

In Media Studies, we helped manage the school library, checked books in and out, and worked on different media-related projects.

Senior Book was dedicated to creating the school’s yearbook—a class that’s unique to many American high schools.

But if I had to choose just one favorite, it would definitely be Pottery.

I had never worked with clay before, so learning how to shape, glaze, and fire ceramics was a completely new experience. It was one of the most creative and relaxing classes I’ve ever taken, and I looked forward to it every week.

That’s one of the things I loved most about studying in the U.S.—school wasn’t just about textbooks. It was also about discovering new hobbies, developing practical skills, and finding classes you genuinely enjoyed.

🇺🇸 How Long Does the Application Process Take?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you can apply a few weeks before school starts.

In reality, the journey to studying at an American high school usually takes close to a year.

Here’s what the timeline often looks like:

📅 August–September

Applications for many scholarship exchange programs, such as FLEX, usually open around this time. If you’re hoping to study in the U.S. for free, this is when you should start preparing and applying.

📝 Fall–Spring

Over the next several months, you’ll go through different stages of the selection process. Depending on the program, this may include:
• submitting your application
• sending your school transcripts
• taking an English test
• attending interviews
• completing additional selection rounds

🎉 Spring

If you’re accepted, you’ll receive your final results and officially begin preparing for your exchange year.

📄 Spring–Summer

This stage is all about getting ready for departure. You’ll complete your visa application, medical forms, insurance paperwork, and other required documents. During this time, you’ll also receive information about your host family and school.

✈️ August

Most American high schools begin their school year in August, so exchange students usually arrive in the U.S. in early or mid-August.

💡 What about paid programs?

Paid programs often have later deadlines than scholarship programs, but it’s still best to apply as early as possible. Many organizations accept applications until December, January, or February, although deadlines vary by program.

The earlier you start, the more options you’ll have—and the less stressful the process will be.

🇺🇸 The Best School Events I’ve Ever Attended

One of my favorite things about studying in the U.S. was the incredible school events. American schools know how to make every event feel exciting and unforgettable.

🏈 1. School Sports

Sports are a huge part of American high school culture. Whether you’re an athlete or just a fan, everyone comes together to support their school.

Some of my favorite events were:

Football games 🏈
Hockey games 🏒
Basketball games 🏀
Track & field meets 🏃‍♀️

The school spirit, cheering crowds, marching bands, and student sections made every game feel like a movie.

🎉 2. School Dances

American high schools have traditions you’ll only see in the movies.

✨ Homecoming kicked off the school year with an amazing football game, spirit week, and a dance.

❄️ Winter Ball brought everyone together for a fun winter celebration.

🌹 And, of course, Prom—the most iconic event of the year. Dressing up, taking photos with friends, and dancing the night away made it an unforgettable experience.

🎡 3. Summer Fairs

During the summer, many towns host local fairs with carnival rides, games, food stands, and live entertainment. Spending an evening riding roller coasters, eating fair food, and hanging out with friends was one of my favorite parts of American life outside of school.

These weren’t just events—they’re some of my favorite memories from my exchange year.

✨ If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing American high school life yourself, now is the perfect time to start planning.

🇺🇸 What I Did to Get Into an American High School

Getting into an American high school didn’t happen overnight. Here are the steps I took:

✅ 1. I applied to an exchange program.
I researched different programs, chose the one that was right for me, and submitted my application.

✅ 2. I was accepted based on my school grades.
My academic performance was an important part of the selection process, so I had to submit my transcripts.

✅ 3. I passed an interview in English.
I answered questions about myself, my goals, and why I wanted to study in the United States.

✅ 4. I passed an English proficiency test.
The test assessed my reading, listening, grammar, and overall English skills.

These four steps changed my life and led to the best year I’ve ever had. 🇺🇸✨

If you’re dreaming of studying at an American high school too, I’ve created a complete guide that explains the entire application process step by step.

These programs don’t depend on government funding or bilateral agreements between countries. Three privately run programs keep going no matter what:
🔹 AFS-USA
🔹 YFU
🔹 CIEE
That means they can keep operating in places where state programs have stalled — they’re not tied to politics the way FLEX/YES are.
But here’s the catch: they’re not free.
Government programs (FLEX, YES) are full scholarships — the U.S. covers everything. Private programs are pay-to-participate. You’re funding flights, insurance, and program coordination yourself. Most do offer partial scholarships or financial aid (AFS and YFU both run merit-based scholarship pools), but full rides are rare.

🗓️ Moreover AFS runs on rolling admissions — meaning there’s no single cutoff date. You can apply almost any time. But “rolling” doesn’t mean unlimited:
• Spots and host families fill up — first come, first served.
• Visa processing takes months. Apply in September or October for a program starting that same fall, and you’ll likely miss it — you’d be placed in the next available intake instead.
• Scholarship consideration usually requires applying early, even though the general application stays open.
Bottom line: no deadline ≠ no rush. Apply early if you want your top choice of date, location, or a shot at funding.

🇺🇸 FLEX is one of the most competitive exchange programs — here’s why.

It’s fully funded by the U.S. government. No tuition, no program fee — just a year living with a host family and attending a U.S. high school, completely free.
It’s also brutally selective: roughly 30,000 students apply every year for only 300–700 spots. That’s about 1 in 50.

📅 FLEX runs through one centralized portal for every country, and historically it opens on the same day worldwide. Last cycle (2026-27), that day was August 13, 2025 — confirmed across multiple country offices (Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Poland). Deadlines to close varied slightly by country (mid-to-late September 2025).

The next cycle is expected to follow the same pattern and open around mid-August 2026 — but the exact date hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
Check your country’s American Councils office in August for the exact date.

What EF Education First actually is

EF Education First is a large private education company, founded in 1965. It’s privately owned by the Hult family, and had around 52,000 employees in 116 countries as of 2017. It started out as an English-immersion travel company and has grown into a company that runs language schools, exchange programs, a private boarding school, and even a university.

Products for studying in the US

EF High School Exchange Year — the classic high school exchange program. Student lives for free with a volunteer host family, attends a US public high school, travels on a J-1 visa. The program fee itself is paid by the student/family, but housing is covered by the host family.

EF Academy — a private boarding school, not an exchange. You actually enroll as a student (campuses in New York and Pasadena). You choose between IB, A-Levels, or AP courses, and graduate with an accredited US high school diploma. This is fully paid tuition, though they do offer merit-based scholarships for strong students.

English language courses — short-term English classes on EF’s US campuses, anywhere from a couple of weeks up to about six months. No diploma, just language training.

University Pathway programs — combined language and academic prep for students who want to get into a US university but aren’t ready yet. On completion, you get guaranteed admission into one of EF’s 230+ partner universities.

Hult International Business School — an actual accredited university, built by the same Hult family. This is a real degree program — bachelor’s, master’s, or MBA — not an exchange or a prep course.

EF English Live — their online English school, no travel required.

Au pair and student hosting — for American families who want to host an international student or au pair, not for students going abroad.
