Here's the thing about teachers: we care deeply about ALL children. This is why we teach. And when we see any child hurt, excluded, left out, uncared for or endangered it activates us. We become activists for those children.
Not because we are woke.
Not because we are "pushing ideology."
But because we care for ALL children. Every one of them.
All children belong. All children are wonderful humans (even the ones you don't like). That means that we often speak up for the children who are targeted, neglected, abandoned and excluded.
As the adult in the room, we set the example and the tone. Everyone gets a seat at the table in my room. Everyone.
If that looks like activism, that's because it is. I want my classroom to become the world. I want everyone (yes, you, too,) to belong and be cared for and be given the opportunity to succeed and be well.
This is the way that we love humanity. We love everyone. Everyone is our neighbour.
