Students spent the afternoon of Sept 29th attending the commemoration ceremony for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Kihciy Maskikiy/Aakaakmotaani reconciliation garden on the Alberta Legislature Grounds where they listened to elders, politicians and speakers share their thoughts on Orange Shirt Day and the ongoing commitment to the TRC. Donita Large, who also works with our students at BCR was featured as an Indigenous singer sharing her songs Sweetgrass and Reconciliation Sky during the event. We hoped to explore the Reconciliation garden and Treaty 6 medallion sculpture but ran out of time before we had to return to school.

Tipi teachings today as our students helped to put up the tipi in our school yard to commemorate Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation. The young women smudged orange ribbons and prayed for our women relatives and they were hung on the poles. Such a special honour to be a part of. 💕

We spent a beautiful Wednesday afternoon with Roots for Trees through the city of Edmonton planting sweet grass, strawberries, birch trees, cranberry and Saskatoon bushes. Teachings from Knowledge Keeper Gary Gagnon blessed us with good energy to put forth in our planting.
