Fire Prevention Week runs from Oct 4-10.
This year's theme from the U.S.-based National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on lithium-ion batteries. It's an American campaign, but the message applies to Canadian workplaces too.
On a job site, fire prevention covers more ground. It starts with knowing what's stored in the building, how it's labelled and what it reacts with.
Three questions worth asking your crew this week:
1️⃣ Can everyone read a WHMIS label, including the hazards that carry no pictogram, and find the fire-fighting measures in Section 5 of the SDS?
2️⃣ Are chargers and batteries kept clear of combustibles, and are damaged batteries taken out of use?
3️⃣ Does everyone know where the nearest extinguisher is and how to use it?
