This week, for Fraud Prevention Month we’re covering online scams and fraud. One of the best ways to protect yourself when you’re conducting business online is to set up a good defence. Here’s how:
o Create a strong password with a minimum of 8 characters, including upper-and lower-case letters, at least one number and one symbol, such as an exclamation point or dollar sign. Also consider using a passphrase that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess.
o Create unique passwords for all your online accounts – don’t reuse them.
o If your online account offers multi-factor authentication, use it.
o Only log into your accounts from trusted sources.
o When it comes to personal information, play it safe. Don't reveal personal information over social media.

Fraud has evolved into a highly organized and global crime.
Many networks use professional grade tools to mimic legitimate organizations and gain trust.
Remember: Pause. Verify. Protect.
A few seconds of caution is one of the most effective ways to prevent victimization. Collective awareness helps limit the reach of these operations and strengthens community safety.

Our Crime Stoppers Casino Fundraiser is coming up and we're looking for volunteers to join us and help make it a success.
Casinos are one of the most important ways Crime Stoppers raises funds to support our programs - including rewards of up to $2,000 for tips that lead to arrests.
We currently have day and evening volunteer positions available, and no experience is required. Training will be provided.
If you're interested in volunteering with Crime Stoppers, please email [email protected] or send us a message.
Volunteering is also a great way to meet others who care about community safety. Thank you for helping keep our communities safe.

According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), Canadians lost over $704 million to fraud in 2025.
Reported losses since 2022 surpassed $2.4 billion. Shockingly, these numbers only account for the 5% to 10% of fraud cases that do get reported.
This March, we’re rejoining forces with CAFC and Royal Canadian Mounted Police for the 22nd edition of Fraud Prevention Month (FPM) to continue to help you Recognize, Reject, and Report the new faces of fraud.

Fraud may not leave a visible crime scene, but its impacts are real.
In 2025, Canadians lost over $704 million to fraud, and that’s only from the 5-10% of incidents reported.
These aren’t isolated incidents; they’re part of a broader criminal enterprise.
This Fraud Prevention Month, the RCMP is teaming up with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), the Competition Bureau Canada , and over 80 partner organizations from across the country to provide Canadians with the information they need to recognize, reject, and report fraud.

🚨 Fraud Prevention Month reminder: Scammers are now using AI to make their schemes sound shockingly real. Some can clone a loved one’s voice from a social media clip, while others create deepfake videos that look like they’re from your boss, asking you to send money or information.
If you ever get an urgent request that feels off — pause, hang up, and verify using a trusted number. A 10‑second check can stop a very convincing scam.
