The Last Day of School — and What a Year It Has Been
There are no words adequate enough for what this year has meant to me — though I will try.
To our Kindred Spirits families: thank you. Thank you for trusting in the Montessori philosophy, in this little school, and myself (Miss Karen). You took a leap of faith, and what grew from that leap was something I could not have predicted even in my most hopeful imaginings. We did not just build a classroom this year. We built a community.
I watched your children arrive as individuals and become a family of learners — curious, empathetic, joyful, and deeply respectful of one another and of the world around them. Three and four year olds who approached every day with an openness that reminded me, again and again, why I have devoted my life to this work. The adventures we shared, the discoveries we made together, the quiet moments of concentration and the bursts of delight — I carry every one of them.
And now, something magical is on the horizon. Next year, our returning children step into their role as the experienced ones — the guides, the helpers, the leaders. This is the Montessori classroom coming fully alive. A child who has lived the process, who knows the rhythms of the room, who can extend a hand to a newer, younger friend — there is no richer learning than that. For any of you who have wondered what makes Montessori different, this is a large part of the answer.
But first — rest. This is also part of the cycle. A summer to breathe, to digest all that has been learned, to play freely and recharge for the year ahead. I wish each of your families a joyful, restorative summer.
To any families who have been watching our journey from the sidelines and have felt that quiet pull — we would love to meet you. Our morning class is full, but we have a few spaces remaining in the afternoon. Miss Karen will be at the school throughout the summer preparing for September, so please don’t hesitate to call or pop by. Montessori is like no other experience, and you will not regret taking that leap.

Our school yard just got a little more magical. 🌱

Our neighbour Mr. Leonard showed up with seeds, knowledge, and the most generous spirit — and together we planted pumpkins, corn, cucumbers, sunflowers, peas, beans, and flowers right outside our classroom door.

The corn and pumpkins will be waiting for us when we return in the fall 🎃🌽 — a living lesson in patience, cycles, and the way nature keeps its promises.

He’s also installing a rain barrel so our children can water the garden themselves and discover firsthand why every drop matters. That’s Montessori at its most beautiful — real work, real purpose, real world.

And this garden didn’t grow from one person’s hands.

Mr. Leonard broke ground and brought his knowledge. Our families donated raised garden beds, planting pots, plants, and seeds — already dreaming ahead to next year and the year after. What’s in the ground today is just the beginning. We have a school yard that is literally growing alongside our children — evolving, expanding, and deepening with every season.

Our neighbours are becoming our teachers. Our families are becoming co-creators. Our community is becoming our classroom.

And what a classroom it is — one with dirt under your fingernails, sun on your face, and the quiet thrill of watching something you planted push through the soil.

This is Montessori as it was always meant to be. Not just inside four walls, but rooted in the real world — tended by many hands, across generations, with love.

This is how the world works best. 🌻

🎉 Season 3 — and we could not be more excited!
Our Book Club community just keeps growing, and this summer we are bringing something truly special. After two wonderful seasons together, we are heading into our third with a brand new theme, a brand new book, and a brand new reading room to welcome you into. Our Summer Book Club is a Montessori-inspired program designed for preschoolers and their parents to share the joy of stories, science, and community — the perfect way to wind down after a long, hot summer day.

Our summer program features:

✨ A Brand New Chapter Book — This summer we are diving into the world of science and magic with a story full of curiosity, problem-solving, and wonder. Each chapter invites children to observe, question, and discover — nurturing a love of both reading and the world around them.

✨ A Calm, Child-Centered Approach — Every session is designed to encourage curiosity, listening, and gentle participation. Through guided conversations and hands-on science activities, children strengthen focus, cooperation, and self-expression — all within a warm, developmentally appropriate environment inspired by Montessori values.

✨ Parent-Child Participation — This is a parent-participation program, giving families the chance to learn and grow together. To keep our space calm and focused, we welcome one parent per child each session. Families are encouraged to read the weekly chapter together at home between sessions — helping children arrive connected, curious, and ready for more.

Whether your child is discovering chapter books for the first time or already loves getting lost in a story, our Summer Book Club offers a peaceful, joyful, and memorable way to grow together through reading.

Just like that — the easel is fresh, clean and ready for the next little artist who comes along. 💛
In Montessori caring for our environment is not an afterthought — it is woven into everything we do. When a child completes a full cycle of activity — from setting up, to creating, to tidying up after themselves — something really beautiful happens. They feel capable, they feel proud and they begin to understand that the spaces we share belong to all of us. 🌱
These small everyday moments are how we grow the next generation of children who are caring, aware and responsible — not because they were told to be — but because it simply became a natural part of who they are. 💛

You may be wondering who is behind Kindred Spirits Montessori School. The story is a simple one — a lifetime spent with children, learning from them and believing deeply in what they are capable of. This school is where that journey led me.

Every Montessori teacher knows that moment — when a child moves from trying to understanding and their whole face changes. That moment is everything. It is why I do this.

I have spent a lifetime in the orbit of children. Some of the little ones I once babysat here in Drumheller are now sending their own children to my school. From nanny, to piano teacher, to Young Naturalist Club leader, to Montessori teacher, to homeschooling mom — every chapter has led here, back to the prairies, back to where I began.

My Montessori training came through the Western Montessori Teachers’ College in Vancouver, linked to St. Nicholas Montessori Centre in London — and I had the profound privilege of learning under Professor Emeritus Carol Scarratt, a teacher in the direct lineage of Maria Montessori herself. I carry that fourth-generation thread with deep gratitude, not as a credential to display, but as a responsibility to honour.

Kindred Spirits Montessori School was born from a desire to add something new to this community — a complete and authentic Montessori experience, lovingly prepared and rooted in over a century of proven practice. We are so glad to finally call Drumheller home.

This school is not simply a program. It is a way of seeing children — as capable, curious, whole human beings, already full of everything they need to flourish. Our purpose as guides is to walk alongside them as they grow into confident, compassionate citizens of the world.

🌿 The Magic of Language in the Montessori Early Years 🌿
There is nothing quite like the moment a child’s eyes light up when letters stop being individual sounds and suddenly become a word. That moment — that beautiful ah ha moment — is one of the most profound gifts we get to witness as Montessori educators. 💛
In Montessori we understand that language and reading do not emerge on a schedule. They emerge when a child is ready. And that readiness looks different for every single child — because every single child is beautifully and uniquely their own.
Encoding is a process. It is the gradual and deeply personal journey of understanding that letters carry sounds, that sounds come together to form words and that words carry meaning. It unfolds quietly and then suddenly — all at once — it clicks. And when it does? There is nothing like it. 🌟
Our Montessori language program is carefully designed to honour this journey. From the sandpaper letters that connect touch to sound, to the moveable alphabet that allows children to build words before their hands are ready to write — every material exists to follow the child. We introduce language through all the senses, layering sounds, symbols and meaning in a way that feels natural and joyful rather than forced or rushed.
We do not push. We do not pressure. We prepare the environment, we observe carefully and we trust each child’s own beautiful timeline completely. 🌱

🌿 Friday Nature Adventure Day 🌿
The warmth has returned and the earth is waking up — and we could not be more excited to witness it together.
This week our little explorers headed outside for our Friday Nature Adventure and spring did not disappoint. We spotted birds soaring over the river through our handmade binoculars, went on a ladybug hunt and yes — we hugged some trees. 🐞🦅🌳
What makes these outings so special is the story they are telling together. This is our third season as a community — we watched the leaves blaze with colour and drift to the ground in fall, we marvelled at the quiet stillness of winter as the earth and animals rested — and now here we are in spring, watching life blossom and burst open all around us.
These children are not just observing nature — they are learning to be part of it.
In Montessori education nature is not a field trip — it is a classroom. It teaches patience, wonder, scientific thinking, empathy and a deep respect for the living world. When a child stops to watch a ladybug or listens for a bird call or wraps their arms around a tree — something profound is happening. They are connecting. They are learning. They are becoming. 🌱
We feel so grateful for every season we have shared together — and we cannot wait to see what spring reveals next!

🪺 Following the children’s lead is where the magic happens! ✨

Our little naturalists have been OBSESSED with birds lately — and we leaned all the way in! 🐦

This week we:
🌿 Built our own birds nests using straw and glue — Robins use mud as their natural glue to bind their nests together. We used the human version!
🐦Made homemade binoculars and went bird watching
🎶 Listened closely to bird calls and discovered that birds actually TALK to each other through different songs
🪺 Welcomed the Robins back for spring and learned how to recognise their song
🥚 Explored our geometric solid — the OVOID — and made an incredible discovery...

Eggs are ovoid shaped for a reason! 🤯 Unlike a ball, an ovoid spins in a tight arc and curves back toward the center rather than rolling away — which means eggs stay safe inside the nest instead of rolling out. Nature is a genius.

This is Montessori at its best — one child’s curiosity about a Robin outside the window became a full exploration weaving together science, math, language, and art. No lesson plan required. Just children, wonder, and a guide who said YES to following where their interests led. 🌱
