Yukon University is offering HIST 140: History of Yukon First Nations and Self Government (3 credits)

Dates: Tuesdays, 6-7:30pm, Sep. 8 - Dec. 1, 2026 w/ overnight camp September 18-20 (Fri-Sun)

Cost: $447 tuition* + $61 student fees ($508.00 total)
*tuition waived for those age 65+

Yukon University recognizes that a greater understanding and awareness of Yukon First Nations history, culture and journey towards self-determination will help to build positive relationships among all Yukon citizens. HIST 140 (3 credits) is a prerequisite for many of YukonU’s courses.

Using a Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in framework, this course explores Yukon First Nations history, culture, and governance. Topics include long-ago history, identity, subsistence economies, social and political organizations, cultural expressions, and cultural protocols. Responses to colonialism are examined with a particular emphasis on the history of land claims and the emergence of contemporary First Nations self-government.

This course weaves together a classroom and land-based format: students will spend time learning with Elders, knowledge holders, and YukonU faculty in a classroom setting and at Nänkäk Chèholąy, Land of Plenty.

Prerequisite: ONE of the following: ENGL 12, EAP 060, ENGL 060, ENGL 100 OR written approval from the program advisor. Please contact us for more information.

Dual credit program for Yukon secondary school students: The Dual Credit program is designed to give grade 11 and 12 students the opportunity to begin post-secondary journey while in high school - offering a head start grounded in the unique strengths and opportunities of the North. By enrolling in this course, you’ll earn credits that apply to both your high school graduation requirements and a YukonU certificate, diploma, or degree. Learn more!

This course may be used to fulfill the Yukon First Nations Core Competency requirement.
