My Story

Hola,

My name is Ashley Clarke-Kelloway and I am the owner of Salmantina Spanish Language School in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. My passion is the Spanish language and culture and I have dedicated a large portion of my life to learning, and more recently, to teaching Spanish to those who do (or will, I hope!) share my passion.

I started learning Spanish when I was in high school, and continued to do a double major in French and Spanish at Memorial University of Newfoundland. During my time in university, my passion for Spanish further developed and I served as the President of the Memorial University Spanish Society. I also received the Spanish Ambassdor to Canada's award upon graduation. As part of my undergraduate degree, I went to Salamanca, Spain to do some intensive Spanish studies. I loved it so much, that after graduating, I applied to do my Master's degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Universidad de Salamanca. I learned some great teaching techniques specific to Spanish as a Second Language, spent over a year immersed in Spanish culture, and wrote and defended my thesis, all in Spanish.

I have taught Spanish at Memorial University's Division of Lifelong Learning, in the French and Spanish department of Memorial University, given many private lessons for companies and individuals. In 2017, I decided to start my own school out of my home.

I use the communicative style in teaching Spanish, which means I incorporate lots of conversation and practice. I encourage making mistakes, as that helps us with the learning process as well.

I decided to start my own school so that I can offer what I believe to be the best learning experience. I keep my class sizes small to ensure that each and every one of my students gets to practice and gets the attention they deserve.

If my classes sound like something you'd be interested in, check out my page for more information, or don't hesitate to contact me.

Hasta pronto,
Ashley Clarke-Kelloway
